First-date jitters can only be rivaled by one other milestone: the first time you cook for someone you love. And believe it or not, even Priscilla Presley knows those nerves well—after all, she was cooking for Elvis. During an episode of The Tamron Hall Show, Presley shared the charming story of the first night she cooked for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and how she managed to forget one very important ingredient.
Growing up, Presley has shared that her absolute favorite childhood food was her mom’s spaghetti sauce. So when she had the chance to cook for her “Boo” at none other than Graceland—Elvis’ famous Memphis home—she knew that childhood favorite was exactly what she wanted to make.
Presley didn’t take cooking for Elvis for the first time lightly. In fact, she worked diligently to prepare the sauce just right. “I’m cooking for him, and I’m calling my mother every 10 minutes about the sauce, and what else should I put in it, and you know how much more, and—OK I think I got it—and I hang up and I’m so excited I got this sauce all ready,” she recalled to Hall.
Once the sauce was ready, and Graceland was likely filled with the delicious aroma of a rustic tomato sauce, Presley remembers walking to the table with the bowl of sauce, where Elvis and a friend were waiting. The table was set, she placed the bowl down and waited for them to dig in.
“And then he’s sitting there and I’m sitting there, and I’m going, ‘aren’t you going to eat it?’ And he goes… ‘where’s the spaghetti?’”
Met with laughter from Hall and the audience, Presley admitted that in her nervous excitement to make the perfect meal for Elvis, she forgot one of the most important ingredients in spaghetti with tomato sauce…the spaghetti!
While we don’t have the exact recipe Presley used that night, pasta with tomato sauce remains a simple, comforting meal that’s perfect for a first dinner date or any night you’re cooking for yourself or someone else. Made with just a few ingredients including fresh or canned tomatoes, garlic and basil, it’s a satisfying dish that comes together quickly using pantry staples.
Luckily for Presley, forgetting the spaghetti that night didn’t stop Elvis from becoming one of the most famed musical artists in history. And while her recipe may have been missing a key ingredient that night, Presley’s mishap serves as a reminder that even the most memorable meals don’t have to be perfect.
