Among its various appealing and unique traits, Shonen manga are often known for featuring intense battles that cause excitement among fans worldwide. When thinking about the greatest anime of this genre, it is often that fans are reminded of the epic battles between the heroes and the villains, and with good reason. Yet, this causes audiences to sometimes forget about the characters who are there to make sure the fighters can carry on after a massive confrontation: the healers.
If not for the medics and support characters who heal the heroes after a fight, the powerful Z Fighters would have fallen while trying to defeat Frieza, and the Shinobi World would be devoid of all life thanks to Madara. Shonen healers are vital for the success of the protagonist, and more often than not, are the backbone of any iconic team of characters, making sure they can live to go on another adventure.
Orihime Inoue – Bleach
The world of Bleach is one dominated by powerful and skilled swordsmen, which makes each confrontation a matter of life or death. Frequently, the most powerful characters in the series gained popularity by demonstrating their skills in outstanding battles. Yet, whenever their abilities were not enough to avoid damage, they required someone who could help them heal quickly enough to finish the fight. Enters Orihime, one of the main reasons why the main cast survived the most gruesome encounters.
Thanks to her Six Princess Shielding Flowers, spirits who reside in the pins of her hair and grant her special abilities, gave her access to one of the most broken abilities in anime. By pouring her energy into an injured target, a technique called Twin-God Reflection Shield allowed her to reject any damage caused during battle by altering the time and space of the patient. Orihime was powerful enough to create entire limbs or heal people from mortal wounds without any effort, and in record time.
Sakura Haruno – Naruto
The members of Naruto’s Team 7 are legendary among all shinobi, due to their pivotal roles in saving the world from the strong villains who wished to conquer it. The titular protagonist and his rival, Sasuke, are arguably two of the most popular characters in anime history. Sakura, the final member, has been lamentably underestimated by fans from the beginning. While true that her attitude during the first few episodes was not adequate for a kunoichi, she went through a life-changing character arc as the story progressed.
After her intense training with Tsunade, one of the most respected kunoichi in the franchise, Sakura went from a scared teenager to a powerful warrior with amazing medical abilities. Sakura’s skills were far above any other healer in the series, able to heal even the most concerning injuries. If not for her knowledge, Naruto would have died after Kurama was taken from him by Obito. Her contributions to the medical field completely changed the paradigm, as proven by the advancements in the field shown during the Boruto series.
Josuke Higashikata – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Over the years, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has become one of the biggest and most celebrated franchises in anime. This is not only thanks to its amazing cast and complex narratives, but also thanks to the Stand power system. These intriguing manifestations of the users' souls can have a plethora of different effects, from simply creating vines that can help the user move to the most powerful in the series, which can completely rewrite reality.
One of the most interesting of them all is Crazy Diamond, belonging to Josuke from Part 4 of the anime. Thanks to his Stand, the protagonist was able to heal targets from almost any injury, restoring their bodies to a point in time previous to the damage being dealt. The only limitation of this power was the inability to bring back someone from the dead once their life force was completely gone. Yet, as long as Josuke arrived before the end of a person’s life, there was no injury too big for him.
Eri – My Hero Academia
The universe of My Hero Academia is objectively one of the best to live in, as those born into it are not only given impressive powers, but it is relatively safe for most. Still, this does not mean that tragedies do not occur in this series, and Eri’s story is the perfect example. Because of her Quirk, Rewind, considered one of the strongest in the anime, she was kidnapped and used as a test subject for Overhaul’s plans.
This simple but terrifying ability allows Eri to bring any organic matter she comes into contact with back in time, restoring it to a previous point. When the ability first manifested, her father became the target of the Quirk, causing him to be effectively erased from existence by becoming a singular cell. Nevertheless, Eri still had major potential as a future healer, as her Quirk was capable of not only giving Mirio his powers back, but a single horn of hers could repair Izuku’s arms, which had been destroyed by Shigaraki.
Dende – Dragon Ball Z
As most anime fans know, the Dragon Ball franchise is not only a staple of Shonen but of the industry as a whole. Audiences all over the globe remember the best battles in the series fondly, as they redefined what the genre should be like. Nonetheless, what fans tend to forget is that the Z Fighters were not always capable of surpassing all of their obstacles through power alone. Even the most powerful characters in anime, like Goku, need help from a healer from time to time.
Although many heroes played the role in the world of Dragon Ball, none did so as flawlessly as Dende, the young Namekian rescued by Krillin and Gohan during the Frieza Saga. Whenever one of the heroes was in dire need of assistance, the future Guardian of Earth would help them jump back to action, using his abilities to heal their wounds. Dende’s skill was such that he could even bring Vegeta back from the brink of death, proving how outstanding the reach of his powers was.
Shoko Ieiri – Jujutsu Kaisen
One of the biggest accomplishments by far inside the Jujutsu Kaisen universe is reaching a level of Curse Energy control where a user can invert its negative output. By doing this, the usually corrosive nature of the energy could be transformed into a positive force, healing the fighter instead of causing more harm. Only a handful of the strongest characters in the series were ever able to master this skill, and most of them were considered geniuses of their field.
Among them, Shoko Ieri stood as the best user of this technique, as she was the only known sorcerer to be able to heal others, not only herself. Adding to her outstanding mastery over Cursed Energy, she was also a trained medical professional, making her the most capable healer of all inside the world of the series. Shoko was an invaluable member of Jujutsu High’s team, as many more would have died without her.
Tony Tony Chopper
Even though its world is known for being colorful, cheerful, and energetic, the One Piece anime has one of the most dangerous universes in Shonen. Not only are the heroes in constant danger of being attacked by powerful pirate crews or Marines fleets, but the seas they navigate are also full of monsters ready to strike. The number of times Luffy and his friends have been close to death is not small, and their fate could have been easily sealed if not for the help of their resident doctor, Chopper.
Trained by one of the best doctors in the world, the user of the Human-Human Fruit has far surpassed his mentor, becoming a pivotal piece in Luffy’s rise to the top. Chopper’s dream is to create a cure for all illnesses in the world, and he has studied hard to achieve it. His dedication has pushed him further than any other medic in the series, being able to find remedies for otherwise incurable ailments, such as Queen’s Ice Demon virus.
Nanika – Hunter x Hunter
Hailing from the Dark Continent of the Hunter x Hunter anime, Nanika is an unknown entity that resides in Alluka Zoldyck, the sister of one of the show’s most powerful fighters, Killua. This entity harbors a power that outmatches that of almost all other characters in the series, as she is able to warp reality to grant wishes. If a brave soul can fulfill a list of cruel requests from Alluka, who is forced to follow along her tenant’s games, they are granted anything they desire.
The only exception to this rule, found by Killua himself, was her ability to heal others, which was seen as an act of kindness. As such, the wish to restore health in another person was not met with the same cruel fate as other wishes. Since Nanika is an almost all-powerful creature, being one of the few anime characters who can manipulate time and space, she could heal almost any wound, as long as she could touch the target.
