8 Blue Flag beaches in Barcelona for 2026 as Barceloneta misses out

Located at the end of Barcelona’s seafront closest to the old town and just a short distance from the iconic W Hotel, Sant Sebastià is one of the city’s most recognisable beaches. It sits between the hotel and Barceloneta, which lost its Blue Flag status this year.

Sant Sebastià offers a full range of facilities, including lifeguard services, showers, accessible access points and a wide selection of restaurants and cafés along the promenade. Its size and consistently high water quality have helped it retain its reputation as one of the capital’s leading beaches.

Located along Barcelona’s Olympic waterfront, Nova Icària is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and generally calm waters. It is well connected by public transport and offers sports facilities, children’s play areas and lifeguard services.

Although it is one of Barcelona’s smaller beaches, it enjoys a prime location between the Bogatell breakwater and Port Olímpic. It can be easily reached by several bus routes or via the Ciutadella–Vila Olímpica metro station.

The quality of its waters and well-organised services make it one of the most highly regarded beaches in the Garraf region. Its proximity to the town centre also allows easy access on foot, while the nearby Aiguadolç marina adds to its appeal.

In the Maresme region, Varador is one of the most central and lively beaches in Mataró, the region's capital. Its location beside the railway station makes it particularly convenient for visitors travelling from Barcelona without a car.

This wide, open beach features coarse sand and a seabed that deepens relatively quickly, something worth considering for families with young children. It offers sports facilities, children's play areas and a selection of beach bars during the summer season.

The Lluminetes area is one of the liveliest stretches of Castelldefels beach. Located closest to the town centre, it combines the spaciousness for which this coastline is known with a well-established residential and seafront setting.

Its wide expanse of fine sand makes it ideal for activities such as beach volleyball and paddleboarding, while sailing schools frequently take advantage of the area's favourable wind conditions. The promenade is lined with restaurants, cafés and terraces, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the year.

Ribes Roges is the most iconic beach in Vilanova i la Geltrú and one of the widest in the Garraf region. Its open shoreline stretches for more than a kilometre, making it easy to find space even during the busiest periods.

The sea is generally calm and the seabed slopes gently, making it especially popular with families. During the summer months, the beach also hosts a variety of cultural and sporting events.
