In our modern lives, it’s hard to imagine surgery without anesthesia, diabetes treatment without insulin, or emergency care without blood transfusions—and thanks to centuries of home-grown medical ingenuity, we don’t have to.
As America hits its 250th anniversary, we’re looking back on some of the most groundbreaking—and often life-saving—health and medical innovations that shape how Americans live, heal, and survive today.
1784: Benjamin Franklin invents bifocals
An estimated 78 million Americans use bifocals today, and we have founding father Benjamin Franklin’s struggling vision to thank for them.
Dubbed the “original hipster” by The Franklin Institute, Franklin was reportedly tired of switching between his reading and his long-distance glasses. In 1784, he gave his optician an unheard-of request: to slice both pairs of his glasses in half and combine them into a single pair, calling his creation “double spectacles.”
1846: First public use of ether anesthesia
On October 16, 1846—known as “Ether Day”—American dentist William T. G. Morton became the first in the world to publicly and successfully use ether anesthesia during surgery for pain prevention, which HISTORY reports is a colorless, pleasant-smelling, and highly flammable liquid that can be vaporized into a gas, ultimately numbing pain while leaving patients conscious. The ether anesthesia was given during a surgery to remove a tumor from a patient.
After viewing Morton’s ether demonstration, physician Oliver Wendell Holmes suggested that the word “anesthesia” be used to describe the process, derived from the Greek word “anaisthesis,” meaning “without sensation.”
It’s important to note that Morton did not “discover” anesthesia and wasn’t the first person to use it for surgery. A modern editorial explains the importance by saying, “He was the first person who, with personal inspiration and conviction, effectively administered the right agent, before the right audience, in the right place, at the right moment in history and ensured that the news of his success spread all over the world.”
We also have an American woman to thank for its development. According to the Mayo Clinic, Alice Magaw is a pioneer nurse anesthetist at the institution. Born in 1860, she wrote five influential papers on how to safely administer drop ether anesthesia, administered the drug to over 14,000 patients without a single related death, and was referenced as the “mother of anesthesia” by Dr. Charles H. Mayo.
Scott Harris Podolsky, MD, director of the Center for the History of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, tells The Healthy that anesthesia’s impact extended far beyond pain relief.
“Anesthesia not only transformed the practice of surgery, but when eventually combined with asepsis [sterile techniques used to prevent infection], it revolutionized the status of the medical profession and the centrality of the hospital to medical care,” he says. “Of all of [America’s] innovations, anesthesia likely had the most impact on the American medical profession and systems themselves.”
1923: Insulin becomes a widely available diabetes treatment
According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes was often a fatal diagnosis before the discovery of insulin, with patients relying on extremely restrictive diets that typically extended life by only a few years.
But in 1921, Canadian researcher Frederick Banting and his team discovered how to extract insulin from animal pancreases, leading to the first effective treatment for managing blood glucose levels.
Following the discovery, American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly played a critical role in making the treatment widely available. And in 1923, it introduced iletin (animal-derived insulin), “the world’s first commercially available insulin product.”
By 1982, the company had developed the first genetically engineered human insulin (Humulin), which the American Chemical Society notes as “the first FDA-approved recombinant drug of any kind.” This marked a major advancement from the animal-sourced insulin that had been used for nearly six decades.
1940s: Modern blood banking and safe blood transfusions are advanced
Before the early 20th century, little was known about blood type compatibility, making blood transfusions risky and often fatal. That changed when Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner discovered ABO blood groups, allowing physicians to perform safer blood transfusions by correctly matching recipient and donor blood types, according to the Institute of Biomedical Science.
The real leap forward came during World War II, when Dr. Charles Richard Drew, an African American surgeon and researcher, developed groundbreaking methods for separating and storing blood plasma on a large scale. The American Chemical Society states that his work not only saved thousands of lives in the midst of the war—as he led the Blood for Britain Project to transport plasma and blood overseas—but he also innovated the nation’s blood banking process and long-term blood preservation and storage techniques used by the American Red Cross.
Today, Mayo Clinic experts say he is referred to as the “father of the blood bank.”
1940s: Penicillin is mass-produced during WWII
After Scottish physician Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin—the first antibiotic—in 1928, it was American ingenuity that led to its mass production in the 1940s.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), University of Oxford researchers turned to the USDA lab in Peoria, Illinois, where scientists furthered production methods. The “miracle drug” became readily available for soldiers wounded during WWII, which the USDA calls “one of the most successful achievements of American chemists and chemical engineers.”
Between their work and the research of American microbiologist Dr. Gladys Hobby—credited as “among the first to begin human clinical trials of penicillin in 1941″—penicillin was available to the masses.
“The U.S., through government-industry cooperation, was able to develop the techniques to mass-produce penicillin,” says Dr. Podolsky. “[It was] enough for clinical application on a wide scale.”
1952: Development of the first external cardiac pacemaker
In 1952, American cardiologist Dr. Paul Zoll—known as the “father of modern cardiac therapy,” according to The Heart Rhythm Society—proved that external electrical pulses delivered through the chest could restart a stopped heart.
His later studies showed that electric shocks could effectively stop ventricular fibrillation (a life-threatening type of irregular heart rhythm) which paved the way for the automated external defibrillators (AEDs) used today.
Dr. Zoll also pioneered the concept of continuously monitoring a patient’s heart rhythm. He was the first to put the technique into clinical practice—setting the stage for modern pacemakers. Today, Yale Medicine estimates that as many as 3 million Americans use pacemakers.
1954: First successful organ transplant
In December of 1954, surgeon Dr. Joseph Murray and his team at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston performed the world’s first successful organ transplant, transplanting a kidney from one identical twin to another.
“This was not only life-saving for the recipient, but demonstrated the possibility of life-saving organ transplantation more generally,” says Dr. Podolsky.
In 1962, Dr. Murray completed the first transplant from a deceased donor, according to Harvard Medical School. He also shaped the pathway for pioneers like Dr. Samuel Lee Kountz, who, according to the American Kidney Fund, performed over 500 transplants in his career (the most of anyone at the time) and performed a live kidney transplant in 1976 on the TODAY show, resulting tens of thousands of Americans offering to donate kidneys.
Dr. Murray’s revolutionary breakthrough laid the foundation for modern organ transplantation, along with the development of immunosuppressive medications, which reduced the risk of organ rejection and made widespread transplants possible. Dr. Murray was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990.
1955: Jonas Salk invents the polio vaccine
In 1955, Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine gave Americans a powerful new tool against one of the country’s most devastating diseases.
Before the life-saving vaccine, polio—which primarily affected children—paralyzed more than 15,000 Americans annually during major outbreaks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). His invention built off the research of scientists like fellow American Isabel Morgan, credited with leading a team that created the first vaccine to inoculate monkeys with a dead virus, versus live.
Within years of the vaccine’s development, cases dropped significantly.
The Salk Institute states that the average annual number of cases in the U.S. plummeted from 45,000 before the vaccine to just 910 by 1962. But the vaccine’s impact has spread beyond the U.S. The institute says, “Worldwide, polio cases have fallen by more than 99 percent since the vaccine’s introduction, thanks to expanded immunization programs and collaborative global efforts.”
Adds Dr. Podolsky, “This represented a major basic science and public health triumph—proved on the basis of a large-scale clinical trial—over a feared viral disease.”
Admirably, Dr. Salk decided not to patent his breakthrough vaccine, allowing for widespread distribution. His decision was marked by his now-famous statement, “Could you patent the sun?”
Together, these innovations did more than improve lives—they helped revolutionize modern American healthcare and pave the way for generations of medical progress that continues to save lives today.
