Some of the most dangerous substances ever put inside a home didn't look dangerous at all. They looked like progress. Builders welcomed them for being affordable, fire-resistant, flexible, or easy to install, and for years, those qualities were all that seemed to matter. The long-term picture told a very different story.
Today, responsible builders and contractors keep a firm list of materials they won't touch. The reasons vary, from cancer-causing fibers and neurotoxic contamination to catastrophic plumbing failures. What these materials share is the same troubling pattern: they performed well in the short run, and caused serious harm over time.
1. Asbestos-Containing Materials
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once widely used in construction for its fire-resistant and insulating properties. It is now known to be extremely hazardous when its fibers become airborne and are inhaled, potentially leading to serious health issues including lung diseases and cancer.
It showed up in walls, ceilings, and even around pipes, and the problem is that once disturbed, it releases tiny fibers into the air that can be inhaled. Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and inhalation of asbestos fibers causes respiratory problems and lung diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.
All three of these diseases experience delayed development, and the diseases may not manifest for 10 to 40 years after the initial exposure. In 2024, U.S. asbestos consumption dropped to an estimated 110 metric tons, down from 150 metric tons in 2023, yet the legacy of decades of widespread use still poses very real risks in older buildings across the country.
2. Lead-Based Paint
Lead paint was commonly used from the early 1900s until it was banned in residential use in 1978 in the U.S. Lead-based paint can release toxic particles as it deteriorates. Although its use has been banned in residential properties, many older apartment buildings still contain this hazardous material.
Renovations and routine aging are enough to bring those particles back into circulation. Lead poisoning from deteriorating old paint is the primary source of elevated blood lead levels in children.
Lead can leach into the surrounding environment, causing serious health issues such as brain and kidney damage, especially in young children and pregnant women. When lead paint is removed, it should only be done by certified professionals to prevent the spread of lead dust.
No responsible builder today would reach for lead-based paint, and for good reason.
3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Flooring and Siding
PVC is a widely used plastic that is made from vinyl chloride, a known human carcinogen associated with liver cancer, brain and lung cancers, and cancers of the blood. Vinyl flooring is made primarily from polyvinyl chloride combined with chemical additives to enhance flexibility and durability.
Key additives include phthalates, used as plasticizers, and volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive health issues, and asthma.
When vinyl flooring is installed, particularly new or poorly manufactured products, the emission of VOCs is often referred to as off-gassing. This releases harmful chemicals into the air, sometimes in high concentrations during the initial weeks after installation.
In July 2024, the U.S. EPA proposed designating vinyl chloride as a high-priority chemical under the Toxic Substances Control Act because it may present an unreasonable risk to people and the environment. Many health-conscious builders now opt for ceramic tile, natural linoleum, or low-VOC hardwood instead.
4. Polybutylene Plumbing Pipes
Polybutylene pipes were widely used in homes from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s, particularly in the United States and Canada. Known for their affordability and ease of installation, this type of plumbing was considered a great advancement at the time.
Over the years, however, these pipes developed a notorious reputation due to their tendency to fail unexpectedly. Builders installed polybutylene piping in an estimated 10 million U.S. structures between 1975 and 1996, and this piping material had a significant flaw that ultimately resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in water damage.
The primary flaw of polybutylene is its acute sensitivity to oxidizing agents, such as chlorine and chloramine, which are used to treat nearly all municipal water supplies. These chemicals attack the pipe's internal structure, causing it to lose tensile strength and become brittle.
This oxidative degradation happens from the inside out, meaning a pipe can appear perfectly fine externally while being moments away from a catastrophic failure. Due to these safety concerns and failures, polybutylene pipes are no longer manufactured or allowed in U.S. building codes, and they were banned from new construction projects after 1995.
5. CCA-Treated Pressure Wood
Chromated copper arsenate, or CCA, is a pesticide and preservative used to prevent rotting in lumber designed for outdoor use. CCA contains arsenic, chromium, and copper and was widely used for residential purposes in the United States from the 1970s until the EPA phased it out in 2003.
CCA-treated wood can be found virtually anywhere outdoor lumber was being utilized, such as play sets, decks, and picnic tables. CCA-treated wood is hazardous to human health because arsenic is a known carcinogen.
Exposure to arsenic can cause cancer of the lung, bladder, skin, kidney, prostate, and nasal passage. Arsenic exposure can also lead to nerve damage, dizziness, and numbness.
The concern is particularly serious for children who play on structures built with CCA-treated lumber, where prolonged skin contact and incidental ingestion of surface residue can occur. Today, builders working on decks and play areas rely on safer alternatives such as alkaline copper quaternary treated wood or naturally rot-resistant species like cedar and redwood.
The common thread running through all five of these materials is that the danger wasn't obvious on day one. It showed up years, sometimes decades, later, in the form of corroded pipes, crumbling paint, or a cancer diagnosis traced back to a building site long ago.
That lag between exposure and consequence is precisely why informed builders treat caution not as overcaution, but as professional responsibility.
