5 Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Trilogies Of All Time, Ranked

The sci-fi genre has included some of the most successful, acclaimed, and revolutionary movie trilogies in cinema history.

Some of the best movie trilogies of all time have been a part of the sci-fi genre, including endless world-building potential, high-concept ideas, and some of the most memorable characters ever brought to the screen. As a genre, sci-fi was central to the development of popular cinema, and some of the best sci-fi stories have evolved into iconic movie trilogies. Comprising three remarkable movies, these trilogies have earned their position as five of the greatest sci-fi adventures in cinema history.

Some of the most incredible sci-fi stories have been told over more than just three movies, with the Alien, Mad Max, The Matrix, Predator, The Hunger Games, Men in Black, and Transformers franchises including four or more celebrated installments. There are a few sci-fi film series, however, that have used only three movies to tell select stories, including these five legendary movie trilogies that will always be remembered as some of the sci-fi genre's very best.

The Jurassic Park Trilogy Revolutionized the Sci-Fi Genre in the 1990s

Comprising 1993's Jurassic Park, 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and 2001's Jurassic Park III, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic Park trilogy persists as a sci-fi masterpiece. The trilogy balances thrilling monster movie vibes with a thought-provoking script and strong performances, as industrialist John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) invites scientists, including Dr. Alan Grant (the late Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), to his island theme park, filled with de-extinct creatures.

Original director Steven Spielberg pioneered visual effects and practical techniques to bring these dinosaurs to life, blending practical animatronics with groundbreaking CGI to push the boundaries of digital effects. Neill, Dern, and Goldblum returned separately for the sequels, while 2015's Jurassic World kick-started a new era for the franchise. The Jurassic Park movies made complex science, like cloning and DNA extraction, easy to understand, and explored the ethics of genetic engineering, allowing them to persist as some of sci-fi's greatest adventures.

Planet of the Apes' Rebooted Trilogy Harnessed Incredible VFX

After five Planet of the Apes movies released between 1968 and 1973, and a failed 2001 reboot, Planet of the Apes was rebooted again in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which improved on the story. Rise harnessed modern VFX and a richer narrative trajectory to reveal the origins of the ape-inhabited Earth we first saw back in '68, and introduced the ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis), whose enhanced intelligence due to exposure to ALZ-113 allowed him to start a revolution.

Rise was followed by 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes, and while the franchise has continued, these three movies form a tight and coherent story. Rise, Dawn, and War focus on Caesar's epic life story from newborn baby chimpanzee to wise and weathered war veteran and family man. Using motion capture technology and a sophisticated evolution of the story, the Planet of the Apes reboots have cemented themselves as some of sci-fi's best.

The Back to the Future Trilogy Gave Audiences a Clear Beginning, Middle & End

Acting as the ultimate time travel playbook and a source of inspiration for countless movies and TV shows that have come after, the Back to the Future trilogy is no doubt one of cinema's most effective and thrilling chapters ever. Robert Zemeckis led each of these iconic movies—1985's Back to the Future, 1989's Back to the Future Part II, and 1990's Back to the Future Part III—to critical acclaim, and in the decades since, they have stood the test of time.

While some sci-fi trilogies have gone on to release more movies exploring different stories, including the Jurassic Park and Planet of the Apes franchises, among others, the Back to the Future series has never been tempted to deliver a fourth. Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty McFly's (Michael J. Fox) adventures through time in the DeLorean had a clear beginning, middle, and end, and it explored emotionally rich themes to become one of the most consistent and meaningful trilogies in movie history.

Star Wars' Original Trilogy Is Still the Gold Standard

There are few sci-fi franchises as monumental and timeless as Star Wars, but not every movie and TV show released under that title has been celebrated. While some of Star Wars' more recent adventures have proven divisive, the original trilogy, comprising 1977's A New Hope, 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, and 1983's Return of the Jedi, is considered a sci-fi masterpiece. The trilogy brings to life the age-old battle between the evil of the Galactic Empire and the good of the Rebel Alliance.

Despite following this epic space opera narrative, the original Star Wars trilogy keeps its relatable characters at its core. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) are remembered as icons of sci-fi cinema. Groundbreaking practical and special effects, an unforgettable score, timeless themes, and some of cinema's most memorable moments establish the original Star Wars trilogy as one of the most culturally significant and recognizable chapters in the history of cinema.

The Avatar Movies Form the Highest-Grossing Trilogy Ever

While the Jurassic Park, Planet of the Apes, Back to the Future, and Star Wars trilogies are certainly iconic and attention-grabbing, no other sci-fi trilogy has fared as well critically or commercially as the Avatar movies. Filmmaker James Cameron spent decades developing Avatar, which premiered in 2009. Cameron and his team developed new technology to bring Avatar to life in the most realistic and high-quality way possible, and did so again for 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water and 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash.

There are plans for Avatar to continue with at least two more movies, but, for now, the series exists as a trilogy that has revolutionized the sci-fi landscape and set an incredibly high standard. Bridging the gap between hard science and raw emotional storytelling—we follow Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as he integrates himself into the alien Na'vi community and falls in love—the Avatar movies are groundbreaking, immersive, and deliver an environmental message that places them among the most important and stunning movies ever.
