Thursday marks the 33rd anniversary of a day Saturday Night Live would rather forget, when the popular comedy sketch show released its first box office flop.
July 23 marks the release date of many famous movies, such as Matthew Broderick's Inspector Gadget in 1999, Matt Damon's Bourne Supremacy in 2004 and Halle Berry's Catwoman in 2004 as well.
And on July 23, 1993, Saturday Night Live released the movie Coneheads, the third film based on one of the show's sketches.
The movie, directed by Steve Barron, stars Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin as Beldar and Prymaat Conehead, two aliens who accidentally become stranded on Earth. And their most recognizable feature is exactly what their name suggests, cone-shaped heads.
But Coneheads was popular well before the movie was made. In fact, it started as a sketch during SNL's second season on Jan 15, 1977, with both Aykroyd and Curtin starring as the same characters.
Coneheads Did Not Meet the Mark at the Box Office
Coneheads was not the first movie based on an SNL sketch that was released. In fact, Blues Brothers was the first, releasing on June 20, 1980, while Wayne's World followed on Feb. 14, 1992. And both became box office hits.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Coneheads, which grossed $21.27 million on roughly a $30 million budget, marking the first SNL movie flop.
Saturday Night Live now has 11 total movies. Wayne's World 2 (1994) was the fourth after Coneheads, while MacGruber is the most recent in 2010.
