Police were dispatched to the scene just before about 11:55 p.m. following a report of a three-car crash. According to an investigation, a tow truck was stopped on the western shoulder and was preparing to load a disabled vehicle when a southbound car hit the disabled vehicle.

The collision reportedly pushed the disabled car partially onto the truck bed before it rolled off the left side into the roadway. “He was out trying to prepare to load this disabled vehicle when in a flash he was struck by an oncoming vehicle in traffic… It was a mess. There was a car rolled over into traffic and a lot of debris and the energy was just down. It was very traumatic,” explained Emma Kerson, Director of Operations for Capital District Towing.

The tow truck operator as well as the driver and passenger of the disabled car were standing outside of their vehicles at the time of the crash, police said. They were reportedly hit by crash debris and taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Just the message is slow down, move over. You can save your life and everybody else around you.” said Kerson.

State Police said the driver of the other vehicle was arrested for driving while intoxicated and other vehicle and traffic law violations. He recorded a 0.08% BAC and was issued tickets returnable to the Colonie Town Court before being released, according to authorities.

A GoFundMe has been set up by Capital District Towing for the tow truck operator to help with his medical expenses.
