Overview

The 2027 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck competes in a tiny segment of two, the Hyundai Santa Cruz being its only like-for-like rival. Unlike full-size body-on-frame trucks, the Maverick’s unibody design is more car-like, and it’s small and maneuverable enough to work well in city confines, though it still has a 4.5-foot bed, a 1,500-pound payload, and a 4,000-pound towing capacity in its most able variants. Both a genuinely thrifty 191-hp hybrid and more performance-minded 250-hp turbo-four powertrains are offered, with FWD or AWD.

What's New for 2027

The Maverick received a mid-cycle refresh for 2025, with a FWD EcoBoost variant and new paint colors arriving last year. The 2027 Maverick is expected to remain unchanged.

Exterior

At around 200 inches, the Maverick is about as long as a midsize SUV, and notably smaller than midsize trucks like the Ranger, but borrows many styling cues from the larger trucks, including its bluff, four-square stance, big grille, and C-shaped DRLs. Only one Crew Cab configuration with a 4.5-foot bed is offered. The LX makes do with 17-inch steel wheels, but 17- or 19-inch alloys feature on the rest. The off-road-oriented Tremor is higher off the ground and more rugged, with all-terrain tires.

Interior

The no-nonsense interior is made of basic but sturdy materials, but the XLT does offer improved trim and upholstery to lift the ambience, while the Lariat introduces leather, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and ambient lighting. The rear offers 35.9 inches of legroom - decent, but snug for taller occupants. In-car tech comprises a standard 13.2-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Wi-Fi.

Performance and 0-60 MPH

The hybrid is not quick, but pickup is lag-free and the 0-60 sprint of 7.6 - 8.4 seconds, depending on the as-tested weight, is decent for what it is. The EcoBoost is a lot quicker, though, doing the job in around 5.8 - 6.6 seconds.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Excellent efficiency of up to 38 MPG combined
  • Affordable sub-$30,000 starting price
  • Compact, easy-to-handle dimensions
  • Innovative FLEXBED system
  • Genuine 5-passenger seating capacity

Cons:

  • Towing capacity maxes out at 4,000 pounds
  • Only one bed size
  • Basic cabin materials
  • Snug rear-seat legroom

Verdict

The Maverick provides buyers with a right-sized compact truck with adequate cabin space, a 4.5-foot bed, and a 4,000-pound towing capacity at a high-value starting price of well below $30,000. The fact that it does so competently and without any glaring faults is a bonus. The hybrids aren’t quick, but are amazingly economical for a truck, and both powertrains offer either FWD or AWD. The XLT is the pick of the litter from a small truck that’s deservingly selling up a storm on the strength of its impressive breadth of talents.
