With training camp for the Green Bay Packers now only 8 days away, here’s a look at some of the important roster battles to keep tabs on.
Trey Smack vs. Lukas Havrisik
Woohoo! Another training camp kicker competition! I do hope Smack wins this job, but I honestly don’t really care that much. I’m sure whoever wins will still end up missing a big kick in a playoff game!
Marshawn Lloyd vs. the gods of bad fortune
Why are we still wishfully thinking and holding out hope for Marshawn Lloyd after 2 seasons that have been fully and completely lost? It’s because he really is that dude when he’s healthy. We obviously haven’t seen it in season yet, but I think it’s telling how every beat reporter and their dog speaks of Lloyd’s training camp performances with such reverent tones.
In training camp, each of those reporters has seen Lloyd access the level that we all consistently saw him hit in college. If Lloyd can finally defeat the gods of injury in 2026, then we are all in for a major treat. Not only would he represent a major upgrade at a key depth position. But he would also provide major relief to an aging Josh Jacobs.
Josh Whyle vs. Luke Musgrave
Luke Musgrave has quietly been falling down the Green Bay Packers depth chart for years now. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a trade piece some time this season.
Whyle on the other hand, has been a pleasant surprise since landing in Green Bay. Whyle has the upper hand as a blocker and has even shown some ability to play in the backfield. That alone is enough to earn significant snaps in the Lafleur offense.
Musgrave has oodles of talent as a pass catcher. He seems to be a perfect fit on paper for a QB like Jodan Love who likes to push the ball deep. But in the last 2 seasons combined, Luke Musgrave has only managed to amass 31 total catches and not a single touchdown. That is simply not good enough, and it’s the reason why the former 2nd round pick finds himself marred in a training camp battle.
WR 5-6 Battle
I see this as a 4-way battle for two spots. I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the following receivers earn one of these spots.
Bo Melton
Skyy Moore
Isaiah Neyor
J. Michael Sturdivant
Bo Melton is the obvious front runner. His experience on the team and special teams value will make him tough to beat out. I really couldn’t see the Green Bay Packers cutting him.
Other than that, any of the remaining 3 guys have a real shot to make the team as the no. 6 WR. Neyor is a big guy with elite movement skills. He may have the highest ceiling of the bunch. Moore provides value as a punt returner and signed a decent size contract bonus this spring. And then there’s Sturdivant who was the steal of undrafted free agency for the Packers.
These are 3 guys to keep an eye on during training camp and the pre-season. Each one of them has a real shot to make the team.
Jager Burton vs. Anthony Belton
Matt Lafleur was caught on record saying that Burton has a real chance to compete for playing time. That could mean a lot of different things, but if he’s looking to crack the starting lineup, then I think the RG position is his best shot.
I do fully expect Belton to win the RG spot outright, but he’s at least worth watching during training camp. Belton showed plenty of flashes during 2025, but he also had his fair share of real struggles. If he doesn’t show real improvement in 2026, then Burton could start knocking at the door.
Barryn Sorrell vs. the field
Sorrell might be my pick for the most important player to watch during training camp. The Packers will have to somehow weather the storm til Micah Parsons returns, and Sorrell is their best shot.

Sorrell showed flashes last season, especially as a run defender, but the overall pass rushing efficiency stats weren’t quite there for him as a rookie. If he can’t show improvement after an offseason of training with Parsons, then look for the Green Bay Packers to add a guy like Jadeveon Clowney.
Bloodbath at CB
Remember when The Joker cracks the pool cue in half and has the mobsters fight for who gets to join his crew in The Dark Knight movie? That’s what the Packers are effectively doing with their CB room right now.

With Bullard playing at the nickel, it means only two of these guys will start. Honestly, none of them look like wonderful options but at least there’s competition! Cisse and St-Juste are the two to watch for me!
