The second day of 2026 SEC Football Media Days provided fewer fireworks than the first, well, outside of Auburn Tigers head coach Alex Golesh's inspirational showing at the Tampa Marriott Water Street and the JW Marriott. Still, there were some notable remarks, to say the least.
One came from Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, who commented on the state of college football's potential to drive the SEC to exist as its own, independent league.
Elsewhere, Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Clark Lea shared a statement that absolved whoever his quarterback is, be it Jared Curtis or Blaze Berlowitz, from feeling pressure to uphold the program's suddenly high standards.

Kirby Smart is ready for the SEC to go independent
On3's Brett McMurphy asked Smart about SEC commissioner Greg Sankey's threat to make the conference independent of the other Power 4 conferences amid a national struggle to "protect" college sports in Congress.
“Yeah, I’ve actually been there for a long time," Smart said in response.
Truthfully, this is probably just tough talk from guys who are trying to sell the SEC is above the rest of the sport. After three consecutive national championships from the Big Ten, now's not the time to break away.
Still, Smart is the SEC's elder statesman in a post-Nick Saban world. His voice is probably the most powerful of any head coach. It's the school presidents who have a much more powerful stake in all this, though. It'd be more notable to hear from them.
Clark Lea doesn't expect another Diego Pavia in his next QB
Lea made it clear on Tuesday that he doesn't expect another Diego Pavia-like performance under center from his next QB1.
"I don't actually believe that that player needs to perform the way that Diego performed," Lea told ESPN during Day 2 of SEC Media Days. Of course, that could be taken one of two ways.
The likelier possibility is that Lea is showing confidence in the roster around the QB. Lea's defense is one of the most experienced groups heading into the 2026 season, while the team's ability to attract better talent has skyrocketed in the wake of two winning seasons, including a 10-win campaign in 2025.
The other way to take it is Lea knows Pavia was generational and doesn't want to put pressure on his successor, especially if it's the true freshman Curtis.
Shane Beamer promises changes for South Carolina
South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer mostly addressed the various competitions across his roster. Notably, South Carolina needs to name a starting kicker and find a worthy counterpart to star EDGE Dylan Stewart.
On a team-wide level, Beamer promised cultural changes for the Gamecocks ahead of the 2026 season that were integrated in the spring.
"We tweaked some things. After the '24 season, we tweaked things. After '22, we tweaked things. You're always tweaking things to get better. You're always trying to learn and look at how we can improve our processes. That's not just after a 4-8 season like we had last year. We've always done that, but certainly this year, we tweaked some things in regards to spring practice. How we did things was a little bit different," Beamer said.
Good for South Carolina, if the changes are evident. Beamer's program regressed significantly in 2025 after a surprising 9-3 finish the previous regular season. He needs to make good on transforming the team's morale and habits to keep his job.
