IMPD responding to critical incident on city’s east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two Indianapolis police officers were stable and a male suspect was killed after being shot during a “critical incident” Wednesday night on the city’s east side.

Representatives of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said officers arrived at a home to find a male and a female, and the male was armed with a gun. The male shot at officers, injuring two of them. At least one officer at the scene struck the male with gunfire at least once.

At a news conference early Thursday morning from Eskenazi Hospital, IMPD Chief Tanya Terry said officers showed up to help someone in need, and it ended in violence with the police being attacked.

“This should not be acceptable to our community or us,” she said, adding she was proud of the officers’ actions and the community should stand by police every day.

Both officers told Terry they are doing OK, despite the circumstances.

A post on X sent at 10:47 p.m. Wednesday from police said, “IMPD officers are on scene of a critical incident in the 8000 block of E 37th Street.”

An automated dispatch system said IMPD was called to a disturbance just after 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 8000 block of East 37th Street. That’s in the Homewood Park housing addition, located southeast of East 38th Street and North Franklin Road.

About 10 minutes later, an emergency medical crew was called to the same address on a report of “gun shot,” the dispatch system said.

IMPD did not immediately share what may have led to the shooting or the names of those involved.

On Feb. 16, two Beech Grove officers were shot in Marion County. Officer Brian Elliott, 33, died after being shot during a disturbance call at a Beech Grove apartment complex. Kenneth Johnson, 47, was arrested after a several-hour search, prompting a statewide Blue Alert. Johnson was eventually found hiding in the laundry room of a nearby apartment complex. A small handgun was found lying in the trash.

On April 20, 2023, two Indianapolis police officers were shot and injured, and a man, Daniel Ghebrehiwet, 46, was shot and killed after a police pursuit that ended at East 30th Street and Post Road.
