If your iPhone is a major part of your life, holding all your personal information, then it’s important to do whatever you can to keep it safe.

iPhones come with all sorts of security features and updates that keep them safe, but they still can’t always protect you. Not only should you be reliant on these safety features, but you should also be paying attention to the ways in which you can help protect your personal data and information yourself, via certain settings and more. Read more about two changes you should be making to your iPhone in order to better protect your information below.

1. Update Your iPhone Regularly

Again, iPhones come with their own set of software that contains all sorts of modern safety features. However, the most updated ones won't automatically start working on your phone unless you update your iOS software regularly.

"I know being an early updater can have issues when your favorite apps aren't updated as quickly, or if you want to review forums for the latest version's issues (eg, the liquid glass update that many despised)," begins tech and cybersecurity pro Wes Anderson. "I typically waited until all the kinks were worked out in the past, too. But that changed many years ago when I became more active in digital privacy and security. Many of those updates patch critical security vulnerabilities that bad actors are currently exploiting in the wild. So it's in your best interest to update your iOS device when available, as not updating your phone leaves you exposed."

2. Use Two-Factor Authentication

One of the scariest scenarios in today's tech-driven world is having your passwords leaked or in the hands of the wrong people. Stolen passwords can easily lead to stolen logins and compromised data that can put you in a vulnerable position. Therefore, using things like Two-Factor Authentication is important, as it can help prevent this from happening.

"I know it's a pain to check your Authenticator App or receive a pin code every time you access a site or platform, but it's an incredibly proactive way to reduce unauthorized access," adds Anderson. "If you're like me, you get notifications of data breaches and your personally identifiable information (PII) a couple of times a year. That means, in addition to your PII, various login credentials were also probably leaked/breached. If you don't use robust, unique passwords for all accounts (which you should), anyone could access your accounts by browsing the breached data. Having 2FA enabled is another step in the right direction."
