Despite disbanding in 1970, The Beatles are still among the most acclaimed and beloved bands. With so many hits, it's difficult to narrow down the English band's top discography. However, Collider just released the publication's ranking of the "10 most perfect Beatles songs."
The list features hits like 1963's "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Yesterday" from 1965, 1968's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "All You Need Is Love" from 1967, and "In My Life" from 1965. According to Collider, the top five most perfect songs by The Beatles include "A Hard Day's Night" from 1964, "Blackbird" from 1968, "Let It Be" from 1970, and "Come Together"from 1969.
"Hey Jude" from 1968 took home the number one ranking. According to the publication, the single, which spent several weeks as the number 1 song on Billboard Hot 100 after September 28, 1968, is simply outstanding because of its encouraging lyrics and grandiose use of instruments.
Paul McCartney Discussed Writing 'Hey Jude' in a 2018 Interview
In a 2018 interview with GQ,Paul McCartney explained he was inspired to write the hit single following his bandmate, the late John Lennon, and his first wife, Cynthia Lennon's split. McCartney said he "felt a bit sorry for their son," Julian Lennon, now 62. He said after the Lennons' breakup, he went "to see the son and Cynthia," who died in 2015.
"I was thinking about the boy whose name's Julian. And I started this idea, 'Hey Jules,'" explained McCartney.
He then said he wanted to write "a reassurance song" for Lennon's son. He noted that he ended up changing the title and lyrics of the song to "Hey Jude."
McCartney also said he still performs the song while on tour. He explained that he enjoys watching his fans sing the song.
"The greatest thing is you feel this sense of community. And in these times, when it's a little dark and people are sort of separated by politics and stuff, it's so fantastic to see them all come together singing the end of 'Hey Jude,'" said the musician.
Julian Lennon Shared His Thoughts About 'Hey Jude' in a 2022 Interview
In a 2022 interview withGood Morning Britain, Julian explained that he has complicated feelings about "Hey Jude." He said the song is "a double-edged sword" because while McCartney came up with it out of genuine concern, "it's also a dark reminder of what happened at that time when dad walked out the door and just left mum." He also said he agrees with the song's message "about making things better in your life" and "hopefully moving forward in a positive way."
"Which is all that I try and do, really on mum's behalf, more than anything," continued Julian.
