Windows 11 is getting a new recovery feature that could quietly reserve up to 50GB of storage on your SSD, and chances are you'll never notice it happening. For this update, Microsoft isn't exactly asking for permission or presenting a setup wizard the first time you boot into the update. There's a new feature that Windows wants you to have, and it simply turns itself on and gets to work in the background.
Of course, now more than ever, PC users are extremely protective of their storage space, considering just how expensive it has become. And yet, it's actually a pretty neat feature that's reserving those gigabytes, and it certainly needs the extra room, too. After all, what's a few gigabytes for what looks to be one of the smartest quality-of-life additions that Windows has received in years?
Windows 11's newest recovery tool is doing far more than System Restore could
Point-in-time Restore creates snapshots of your entire PC
The feature behind all of this is Microsoft's new Point-in-time Restore. It's actually a much bigger deal than its understated name might lead you to believe. Instead of simply rolling back Windows files, or undoing a troublesome driver installation, it regularly creates snapshots that let you rewind your PC to an earlier state. Not only does this include Windows itself, but it also includes installed apps, settings, drivers, and even your own files. That's what makes this a far more complete recovery solution than Windows users have traditionally had access to.
So, the next time a Windows update goes wrong, a buggy driver breaks your PC, or a new installation makes things unstable, all you have to do is jump back to a point before everything broke instead of spending hours troubleshooting or reinstalling Windows from scratch. These snapshots that Windows takes are retained for up to 72 hours by Microsoft, after which it automatically removes them. This gives users a rolling safety net that doesn't have to turn into a permanent backup solution.
The Point-in-time Restore feature is available on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. It is available on Home, Pro, and Enterprise versions of the OS.
Naturally, storing snapshots like these requires disk space, which is where the numbers come from. By default, Windows allows Point-in-time Restore to use up to 2% of your system drive. That number can go up to as much as 50GB on a 4TB drive. However, that's also as far as that number can go, because Point-in-time Restore's maximum space allocation is also 50GB, even on drives bigger than 4TB.
This storage allocation is only scary until you understand how Windows uses it
Point-in-time Restore doesn't immediately gobble up 50GB of your SSD
Seeing Windows reserve up to 50GB of storage on your SSD might indeed sound alarming, as it rightly would be. However, that figure actually represents the maximum amount the feature is allowed to use, and not what it immediately occupies. A 512GB drive, for example, would be limited to roughly 10GB, and a 1TB SSD to around 20GB. As such, only drives that are large enough to exceed the 2% threshold would ever approach the 50GB ceiling. Plus, if your Windows system drive is less than 200GB, Windows automatically avoids taking up any space for the Point-in-time Restore feature.
The reason this feature needs just 2% of the total space is also pretty interesting. The snapshots it takes aren't full copies of the Windows installation. Point-in-time Restore relies on the same Volume Shadow Copy technology that Windows has used for years now, which stores only the blocks that change after a snapshot is created, instead of duplicating your entire drive. As older snapshots expire after 72 hours or storage limits are reached, Windows does automatically remove them to reclaim space.
Provided your PC meets Microsoft's requirements, this feature is enabled automatically after installing the update that introduces it. It happens in the background, but considering how much easier it could make recovering from a disastrous update or failed driver installation, the storage trade-off feels pretty reasonable.
No, Point-in-time Restore isn't just a System Restore replacement
You can turn it off, but most users really shouldn't
Although System Restore and Point-in-time Restore do share the same goal of helping users recover from a bad day, the latter goes well beyond what the former can. Traditional restore points focus primarily on Windows-only files, including the drivers, registry, and install apps. This skips your personal files, and it's here that Microsoft's new approach restores your entire PC to an earlier state, including your documents and other local files. Compared to System Restore that we've relied on for years now, this new feature feels much closer to a complete system snapshot.
Now, if you're feeling some kind of way about allocating more of your SSD storage space to yet another new Windows feature, you can just disable it. I'm of the opinion that this should have been opt-in instead of opt-out, but it's pretty easy to turn off Point-in-time Restore in Windows 11. Just head to Settings → System → Recovery → Point-in-time Restore and switch it off. Doing this also removes any snapshots already stored on your PC, immediately clearing up any space that this feature had taken up on your system drive. If you'd rather rely on your own backup strategy, this is an easy enough change.
For everyone else, though, I'd leave it alone. Giving up a small percentage of your SSD in exchange for the ability to undo a disastrous update or failed driver feels like a trade I'd happily make, especially when my OS is going to be handling the cleanup all by itself.
Recovery is becoming just as important as performance

Now, SSD prices, too, are more unforgiving than ever. That's why spending a few extra gigabytes feels like a much bigger compromise today than it would have just a couple of years ago. However, if that's the price of turning what could snowball into a full Windows reinstall into a minutes-long recovery instead, then it's a trade-off I'd take every single day of the week.
