I changed 4 hidden router settings, and my home Wi-Fi has never been faster

Most people set up their home router once, connect their devices, and never open the admin panel again. That works fine until the issues come. The settings covered here aren't complicated to change, and most of them take under five minutes. The difference is that once they're done, your network is faster, more private, and a lot harder to mess with.

Changing your DNS settings makes your network faster

The DNS system is basically how the internet interprets addresses. It takes the website names you type and converts them into the numerical addresses your computer actually uses to connect. When you first set up your home network, your router automatically uses whatever DNS servers your ISP gives.

You can get around all of this by going into your router's admin panel and swapping out the default DNS servers for a public alternative. Doing it on your router is the smart move because it adds it to every device on your network at once. So you can have this done for phones, laptops, smart TVs, and everything else.

I prefer doing this at a device level, because some devices don't play nice when this is done. The two most popular options are Cloudflare at 1.1.1.1 and Google Public DNS at 8.8.8.8. Cloudflare is generally considered the fastest, with average response times in the 10 to 11 millisecond range thanks to infrastructure spread across hundreds of cities.

They're also strong on privacy.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup, or WPS, is a very smart feature that feels a little outdated. Instead of typing out a long Wi-Fi password every time you want to connect a printer, smart TV, or security camera, you could either press a button on your router or enter an 8-digit PIN printed on a sticker on the back of the device. Sounds great in theory.

In practice, leaving WPS enabled is one of the worst things you can do for your home network's security. Even though the PIN is eight digits long, the router doesn't check the whole thing at once. It validates the first four digits separately from the last four, and immediately tells the attacker if the first half is wrong before even looking at the second half.

On top of that, the last digit is just a checksum, so there are really only three unknown digits in the second half. Tools like Reaver and Bully can chew through those automatically and crack a router's WPS PIN in anywhere from four to ten hours, without ever needing to touch your actual Wi-Fi password.

Just log into your router's admin panel, find the WPS settings, and turn it off. The push-button method is slightly less exposed than the PIN method since it normally requires someone to be physically at your router, but most routers won't let you disable one without the other.

When you first set up a home Wi-Fi router, it's almost always left on automatic channel selection. You'd think that it could find the clearest frequency on its own. In practice, especially in apartments or neighborhoods where routers are packed close together, this backfires. You could land your network on the same frequencies your neighbors are using, or worse, on channels that partially overlap with theirs.

This is a bigger problem on the 2.4 GHz band than most people realize. That band is carved into 11 channels. The catch is that each channel needs space to operate.

The channels are physically wider than the space between them, so they bleed into each other by design. Say your router auto-picks channel 3 and your neighbor's is on channel 4. Those two networks will interfere with each other in a way that's actually worse than if they were on the same channel entirely.

Go into your router's admin panel and set the 2.4 GHz channel manually. You want channel 1, 6, or 11. Those are the only three channels in the entire 2.4 GHz band that don't overlap with each other at all.

If you're someone who's always online or has a house full of devices running around the clock, you've probably noticed that your Wi-Fi tends to get slow after a few days or weeks. Pages that used to load instantly start to lag, and the whole connection feels a bit shaky.

Home routers are basically tiny computers built on the cheap, and they usually come with somewhere between 16 and 128 MB of RAM. That's not much, and after days of nonstop use it starts to show. The router keeps track of every active connection coming from your phones, TVs, smart home gadgets, and streaming apps, and that connection table can fill up fast. When it does, the router just starts dropping traffic.

On top of that, small memory leaks pop up in the router's internal software. They slowly eat up whatever's left until the device has no choice but to start killing off its own processes just to stay on.

To fix it, just schedule your router to reboot itself automatically in the middle of the night. Most routers have this option buried somewhere in the admin panel under something like System Tools, Schedule, or Administration. Set it for 3 or 4 AM, and you'll never have to think about it again.

You can make these changes today

None of these changes mean you have to be a network engineer, and you won't need to touch most of them again after the initial setup. That said, routers vary enough that the exact menu names might look different from what's described here, so you may need to poke around a little before you find the right settings. The WPS fix alone is worth doing today if you haven't already.
