There are only so many Wi-Fi tweaks we can try before finally buying a new router. The good thing about that purchase is that once you get a router, it'll be good for years and years.
... Right?
Not necessarily. Even if you bought your router in 2025, it can already lack features that are becoming increasingly relevant in 2026.
Your router might have been old when you bought it
Routers aren't like graphics cards or processors
If you're a desktop or laptop enthusiast, you're probably used to seeing the latest hardware on the shelves. Laptops, GPUs, CPUs, all of that stuff gets refreshed every year or two, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that's more than three to five years old at any given time. The older hardware gets phased out once the latest generations have been around for a while and production ends.
Routers aren't like that. They don't disappear from store shelves the moment a new gen hits. Manufacturers and retailers often keep older models around for years, usually at increasingly tempting prices. That means a router you bought in 2025 could've originally launched in 2021 or 2022, long before Wi-Fi 7, 6GHz, and multi-gig Ethernet ports became common selling points.
The discount makes perfect sense at the time, and honestly, most people don't dig too deep into router specs. Even an older router can work perfectly well, too, but inside, it might hide hardware that's growing more outdated every month. That's why you may think you have a new router, but the specs might tell you something else, and several key elements may be in need of an upgrade.
Wi-Fi 7 became affordable before it became consistent
The same Wi-Fi 7 label can describe very different routers
Let's just assume that you end up buying a router that secretly launched a few years ago. Chances are that one of the new features you'll be missing out on is Wi-Fi 7, and that's still true even in many recent models.
Wi-Fi 7 routers became relatively affordable very quickly, and manufacturers reached those lower prices by cutting different features from different models.
As a result, two routers carrying the exact same Wi-Fi 7 label can offer very different hardware underneath. One might include the 6GHz band, 320MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation, and several multi-gig Ethernet ports, while another drops some of those features and still technically qualifies as Wi-Fi 7. The logo can be misleading; it only tells you which generation the router supports, but not how complete the implementation is. As a result, even a new-ish model can already sit well behind better-equipped alternatives.
Your new router may not have the 6GHz band
Missing 6GHz also means missing Wi-Fi 7's widest channels
Here's another thing you might be missing out on: 6GHz. The 6GHz band is one of the easiest features for manufacturers to cut, especially on cheaper dual-band Wi-Fi 7 routers.
Without this 6GHz band, the router is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz, which also means it can't use Wi-Fi 7's widest 320MHz channels. Of course, far be it from me to imply that makes the router useless, but I'm also of the opinion that if two routers are similarly priced, you might as well get the better one.
Gigabit Ethernet can make fast Wi-Fi pointless
The ports may have aged faster than the wireless hardware
I'm a big fan of using Ethernet over Wi-Fi; in fact, I think that change alone can be the biggest home network upgrade. However, a router with only gigabit Ethernet ports can still become the bottleneck, even if its wireless connection advertises speeds well above 1Gbps.
This matters if you have a multi-gig internet plan, transfer files to a NAS, or connect a fast Wi-Fi 7 device to a wired server, so check the WAN and LAN ports separately. Some routers include a single 2.5GbE port but leave every LAN port at 1Gbps, which doesn't give your wired devices as much room to benefit.
Early Wi-Fi 7 features may still depend on software
Hardware support doesn't mean everything's going to work fine
Even when the hardware seemingly checks every box you could possibly think of, Wi-Fi 7 features still heavily depend on firmware, drivers, and the devices connected to the router. As a result, older routers are less likely to have these features, or keep receiving firmware updates for years to come.
Multi-Link Operation is a good example: the router may technically support it, but the feature might need to be enabled manually, work only with certain bands, or behave differently depending on the client device and its software.
But before you write off a newer router, update its firmware and your device's Wi-Fi drivers, then check the settings page and see whether features such as MLO are actually turned on. There's no blanket statement that applies here; some routers will have it, some won't, and your best bet is to check whether yours does.
Should you really replace your router?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not implying that you have to replace a router you bought relatively recently just because it might be outdated. What's done is done, and routers aren't really the type of thing that needs replacing constantly. If you're satisfied with yours and it's still getting firmware updates, you can push back on that purchase for however long you need to. But next time you shop, be careful to check whether the router is actually recent.
