Godzilla is nothing short of a pop culture icon and has been since his introduction in 1954's aptly-titled film "Godzilla." A memorable creature and the focal point of numerous unforgettable film and television productions, it should come as no surprise that Godzilla has cultivated a devoted fanbase the world over. With such a rich history and deep lore behind him, if you're looking to join this fandom, there's plenty to learn about the iconic kaiju. For instance, did you know that Godzilla — despite his lack of wings — has the ability to fly?
To describe it nicely, 1971's "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" is an absolutely wild movie. It has some pretty trippy visuals in addition to being a movie about Godzilla (Haruo Nakajima) facing off against a garbage-eating alien named Hedorah (Kenpachiro Satsuma). During one of their confrontations, Godzilla uses his atomic breath to send himself flying through the air in what has become one of the film's most infamous scenes. It looks goofy, and the logic behind it is lacking, so it's understandable that this aspect of his character hasn't become one of his more frequently seen.
At the same time, one could argue that the scene only comes across as absurd as it does because of the dated visual effects. Therefore, could Godzilla taking flight in the modern era be a decent idea?

Could we see Godzilla fly in the MonsterVerse?
Moviegoers have seen plenty of Godzilla action lately thanks to Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse: a franchise dedicated to big, city-leveling battles between massive monsters. Throughout his appearances in this franchise, we've seen Godzilla play the hits, from swinging his giant tail through skyscrapers to using his atomic breath to decimate his towering opponents. Unsurprisingly, he has yet to take flight in any of these projects, but with modern VFX technology and in-universe lore on filmmakers' side, should they give it a shot?
According to Reddit user u/echoprime11, seeing MonsterVerse Godzilla take to the skies could be fun, and commenter u/HuNteR2885 has just the pitch for making it happen. They explain that within the Hollow Earth, which is an entire ecosystem that exists inside the Earth itself and has spawned several kaijus, gravity works in such a way that objects can float freely in specific areas. Thus, they think it would be neat to see Godzilla levitate due to the low gravity and use his atomic breath as a means of propelling himself to a specific area.
While this is a good idea in theory, and the technology is there to make it look more epic than campy, surely it would be a tough sell for most Godzilla fans. Therefore, if you're one of the few hoping to see Godzilla try out flight sometime soon, it would likely be unwise to hold your atomic breath.
