Forget the crowded beaches of Albania or the overpriced tourist traps of Western Europe.

Vilnius is a wildly affordable, virtually uncrowded European capital where the streets are safely frozen in time, the medieval magic is real, and a beer costs just $3.

But with international tourism to this $60-a-night Baltic gem surging nearly 19% in the first quarter of 2026 alone, your window to experience it in peace is closing fast.

If you've been looking for more budget-friendly spots across the pond that the tourism craze is yet to descend upon, Vilnius is just the place: a charming little European capital that's still virtually uncrowded and wildly affordable.

You might wanna get there quick, though: tourism rose nearly 20% in the first quarter of this year alone.

Europe's Most Underrated Summer Getaway

The capital and cultural heart of Lithuania, a small Northeastern European country on the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between the equally underrated Poland and Latvia, Vilnius is everything your European summer daydreams are made of.

No, it's not on the Mediterranean, and you might want to stick to Saint-Tropez if it's status travel and beachside aperitifs that get you out of the house, but it has something far more precious that much of Southern Europe has long since lost:

It still feels like the Europe of Olde.

By that, we don't just mean the cobbled streets, the old castle, and the historic tavernas-though don't worry, there's plenty of those to scratch your fairytale Europe itch.

Go to any small Italian town marketed as quaint and idyllic-yet anything but-or another “secret” German dorf only the Daily Mail comment section hasn't discovered yet, and you might be surprised to find the usual tour buses, selfie-stick-wielding influencers, and a tourist trap flogging made-in-China souvenirs some grumpy old shopkeeper will swear are handmade.

Vilnius, on the other hand, is still the real deal, which is even more remarkable when you consider it's not some sleepy, run-of-the-mill medieval backwater pretending to be authentic.

This is a full-blown capital of over 617,000 people.

A Medieval Town Frozen In Time

Despite the capital-city status it carries, Vilnius really feels like a medieval town frozen in time.

As you enter the UNESCO-listed Old Town through the blue and white Gates of Dawn, you're immediately greeted by a maze of cobbled lanes lined with pastel-colored townhouses and ornate Baroque churches that dominate the skyline, not endless rows of skyscrapers and traffic-choked boulevards.

None of Western Europe's big city chaos or rising rates of urban violence, either. Even pickpocketing is largely unheard-of in central areas.

Vilnius scores an impressive 83 out of 100 on the Traveler Safety Index-a live safety score powered by real travelers that gives you an accurate sense of local safety, filling the gap left by broad national government advisories that often lump entire countries into one warning.

As a matter of fact, Vilnius is so laid back that it doesn't even have its own metro or tram system. The city center is so compact that most residents get around on foot, while those living farther out in the suburbs rely on buses to go about their daily commute.

The best way to explore is just wandering around and getting pleasantly lost in the labyrinthine streets, but if you need somewhere to begin right in the heart of it all, make it Cathedral Square:

An Independent Artists' Republic In The Middle Of Vilnius

Vilnius' main square is surrounded by historic landmarks, including the Neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral and its freestanding white bell tower, as well as the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, one of the most important royal residences in Eastern Europe.

Lithuania may be a small, arguably not-as-influential Baltic state today, but back in the Middle Ages, it was actually the largest country in all of Europe.

Perched on a hill above the Old Town, Gediminas' Tower is a striking red-brick fortress tower, the last surviving remnant of what was once an impressive castle complex. If you want to see something truly different, though, your next stop should be Užupis.

Rome has the Vatican. Vilnius has this tiny, self-proclaimed artists' republic bisected by the Vilnia River, packed with art-covered walls, quirky cafés, and governed by its own… ahem… ‘constitution'.

No, Užupis isn't a real country.

Think of it as an elaborate insider's joke-one the occasional overly enthusiastic tourist hunting for the next passport stamp will inevitably fall for only to invalidate their travel document-but doesn't knocking back a pint of Lithuanian craft beer by the river at Užupio Picerija make for one heck of an afternoon?

On that note, a pint of beer here will cost you around $3–$4 on average.

By the way, before you take off to Europe this summer, make sure you're up to date with the ever-changing entry regulations now that fingerprinting upon arrival, and an upcoming mandatory travel permit are expected of all American visitors.

Vilnius Is Rising Fast In Popularity

Despite the rising popularity, Vilnius remains one of the most affordable capital cities on the Old Continent. It's no wonder it's dominating talks in budget traveler circles lately.

You'd better get there quickly before the secret's totally out.

According to the Lithuanian State Data Agency, it saw a 19% increase in tourism in the first quarter of 2026, compared to the same period in 2025, with growth driven in a large percentage by international visitors.

From January through March, 258,000 foreign tourists arrived in the country, mainly via Vilnius Airport or the border with Latvia.

The largest numbers of foreign tourists came from neighboring Latvia itself, Germany, Poland, Belarus, and the United Kingdom, with Germans leading among non-neighbors with 28,000 visitors.

It's not on your average Europe-bound tourist's itinerary unless they've been to Europe a dozen times before and are finally setting their sights on checking off the Baltic states, so the kind of traveler who does make it to Vilnius tends to be more well-traveled and culturally curious.

Well, there are those… and then there's the occasional pack of wayward British lads on a beer-fueled budget stag weekend.

Your U.S. Dollars Still Stretch Far Here

Unless you're staying outside the center, chances are you'll do almost all your exploring on foot, so you're already saving a fortune on transportation.

In cities like Paris or London, a day pass will set you back anywhere from $10 to $20, bringing your total transportation costs over a five-day trip to a hefty $50–$100.

If you do need to use the buses in Vilnius, a single ticket (valid for 30 minutes) costs just $0.75, while a 10-minute taxi ride-which is about as long as any trip across central Vilnius ever takes-comes to a very reasonable $5–$7.

Wondering how much you'll be shelling out every time you sit down for a proper meal in the Old Town? How does around $15–$20 sound, drink included?

Lithuania's signature dish is cepelinai, or “zeppelins”: giant meat-filled potato dumplings traditionally served with sour cream and bacon.

Gosh, are these addictive, and they don't get much better than at Šnekutis, just a seven-minute walk from Pilies Street, the busiest pedestrian street in Vilnius.

For Lithuanian pancakes, try Pirmas Blynas on Savičiaus Street, where most mains cost around $10–15. For Lithuanian cold beet soup, one of my own favorite finds was Etno Dvaras, which serves a particularly refreshing šaltibarščiai, perfect for a hot Vilnius summer day.

Wondering how much to budget for accommodation?

Guesthouses in the Old Town generally range from $60 to $100 per night, while more traditional hotels, with spa access and breakfast included, will set you back around $300–$450 for a three-night stay.

In an increasingly overtouristed, overpriced, Disneyfied Europe, it truly doesn't get better than this.
