The 2025 NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs were headlined by an incredible postseason run by Illinois State that included upsets in every game until the championship, including a 29-28 win over the previously undefeated No. 1-seeded North Dakota State.
As NDSU transitions to the Mountain West Conference and competition at the FBS level, a new team could take the mantle as the future premier program in the FCS. Montana State is the defending champion and coming off back-to-back appearances in the championship game.
Or, maybe it’ll be in-state rival Montana, which has finished inside the top 10 in the final FCS rankings in three consecutive seasons.
It might be a long way until the FCS playoff matchups are set, but here’s what we know about the games now:
When Are The 2026 FCS Playoffs Taking Place?
First Round
- Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026
Second Round
- Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026
Quarterfinals
- Game 1: Friday, Dec. 11, 2026
- Remaining Games: Saturday, Dec. 12, 2026
Semifinals
- Saturday, Dec.19, 2026
FCS Championship:
- Monday, Jan. 4, 2027
Where Are The 2026 FCS Playoffs Taking Place?
The first round of the FCS playoffs, through the semifinals, are played in a non-determined venue decided by the seeding of the playoffs. Higher-seeded teams will host their games through the semifinals.
Where Is The FCS Championship Taking Place?
The FCS championship game will be played in FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
For the past 15 seasons, the game has been played in Frisco, Texas, at Toyota Stadium.
Nashville will become the 11th city to host the game.
Who Won Each Football National Championship For The 2025-2026 Season?
- Division I FBS – Indiana def. Miami, 27-21
- Division I FCS – Montana State def. Illinois State 35-34 (OT)
- Division II – Ferris State def. Harding, 42-21
- Division III – University of Wisconsin-River Falls def. North Central (Ill.), 24-14
