X-Men '97 season 2 has just debuted the next evolution of Charles Xavier's dream. Throughout the animated revival series, Professor X has had enduring hope for lasting coexistence between humanity and mutants. However, as humanity continues to fear and oppress mutantkind, recent tragic events have motivated a major status quo shift for Xavier and his X-Men.
As seen at the end of X-Men '97 season 2, episode 6, a major initiative pulled directly from the original Marvel Comics has just been reimagined for the animated series. In the wake of Genosha's devastation and Magneto's recent death at the hands of Apocalypse, it seems Professor X wants to be more proactive in the defense of mutant lives through the creation of a brand-new organization: X-Corp.
Although X-Men '97 season 2 is putting its own exciting spin on X-Corp, the organization already has a fascinating history in Marvel Comics that will likely be followed pretty closely. Here's everything we know about X-Corp and its potential future in X-Men '97 going forward.
Following Magneto's Death, Charles Xavier Debuts X-Corp, A Brand-New Evolution
Following Apocalypse's murder of Magneto, when half of the X-Men were sent into the past to En Sabah Nur's dark origins, Charles Xavier realizes the X-Men can no longer operate as they have been. As a result, the end of X-Men '97 season 2 episode 6 sees Xavier publicly announcing the creation of X-Corp, a major new enterprise with its first headquarters being built amid the devastated ruins of Genosha as a memorial to Magnus and all of the countless mutants who died during the tragic Sentinel attacks seen in X-Men '97's first season (including Gambit).
Rather than limiting the X-Men's work to teaching and training young mutants at Xavier's School in New York, X-Corp looks to represent a major international expansion of the team's mission. Anti-mutant sentiment is only growing, and protecting all of mutantkind now requires a greater presence in an ever-changing world, a necessity that Xavier recognizes must be met.
In the original comics, X-Corp indeed debuted as an international extension of the X-Men, investigating mutant rights violations with offices across the globe. However, a headquarters was never featured on Genosha, a meaningful new twist in X-Men '97's separate continuity. On the page, X-Corp was eventually shut down following the decimation of "M-Day", where Wanda Maximoff nearly wiped out all of mutantkind. However, the company was later revived during the Age of Krakoa, helping oversee the major boom in mutant business and major exports from the brand-new mutant island nation.
Keeping that in mind, X-Corp debuting on Genosha does feel like a nice nod toward what might one day be possible in the future.
What Does The X-Men's Future Look Like With X-Corp?
Overall, X-Corp has some major potential looking ahead ot future episodes of X-Men '97 season 2 (and beyond). With the backing of X-Corp, the X-Men are better positioned to operate on a global scale wherever mutants are in need. Additionally, it seems X-Corp being based on Genosha might help Xavier avoid political pressure from the United States and repeated clashes between the X-Men and Valerie Cooper and her government-sanctioned team of mutants known as X-Factor. However, Cooper still seems determined to go after the X-Men and their "illegal" activities despite their greater independence.
Additionally, Xavier senses that the threat of Apocalypse in the present is imminent, wanting his X-Men to be prepared when the time comes to face En Sabah Nur once more. Case in point, this new episode ends with Apocalypse resurrecting Gambit as his brand-new Horseman of Death. Hopefully, a greater international presence and network through X-Corp will help the X-Men get ready when Apocalypse finally makes his move before the end of X-Men '97 season 2.
