This viral meal is customizable, crunchy, and easy to eat on the go.
Sandwiches are a year-round affair, but summer is when they really shine. Packed up for a picnic or enjoyed on the beach, the humble sandwich is exactly the kind of craveable finger food we want on a hot afternoon. When it’s warm out, we often default to cold sandwiches — piled high with cold cuts, cured meats, and crisp vegetables — and thanks to TikTok, there’s a creative new way to enjoy them.
Earlier this year, the “chip bag sandwich” started making its way across social media feeds, and summer has further fueled its virality. The trend features the ingredients of a classic Italian sub sandwich, minus the bread, chopped up and tossed with a pack of salt-and-vinegar potato chips, then eaten directly out of the bag with a fork.
Although similar dishes have certainly been made before — such as Frito pie served in a bag of its namesake chips — New York-based Yaphank Deli is credited with creating the chip bag sandwich that went viral this year. If you happen to be near Long Island, New York, you can try the original, but this trend is also incredibly easy to whip up at home.
How to make a chip bag sandwich
The most common version of this dish online, and the one that made Yaphank Deli go viral, calls for ingredients you’d typically find in a grinder-style sandwich, like provolone, salami, ham, iceberg lettuce, red onion, tomato, oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper, plus Hal’s New York’s salt and vinegar kettle chips. However, the chip bag sandwich is infinitely customizable, and Yaphank even lets customers pick which chips and toppings they want to put in their “sandwich.”
Pepperoncini or sun-dried tomatoes would go well with Italian cured meats and cheeses, too. Or you could switch up the flavor profile entirely by incorporating components like turkey, bacon, cheddar, honey mustard, spinach, or barbecue potato chips. Yaphank currently offers a chicken Caesar chip bag sandwich, complete with Buffalo potato chips.
To make a chip bag sandwich, start by gathering all your ingredients on a cutting board. Using a large chef’s knife, chop all the components together, keeping each piece roughly the same size, until they’re small enough to be easily scooped up with a fork. You’re looking for something close to a large dice, and you don’t want to chop the meat and toppings so finely that they become a paste. Transfer the chopped ingredients to a bowl, then add any condiments you’re using and stir to combine.

Just before you’re ready to eat, open your bag of chips carefully. (You’re going to serve the dish in the chip bag itself, so you may want to cut the packaging with scissors to prevent it from splitting down the wrong side.) Crumble the chips into the sandwich ingredients, toss everything together, then transfer the mixture to the chip bag. Make sure to eat it right away, or you risk the chips becoming soggy.
The result is endlessly riffable, naturally gluten-free, and easy to enjoy with a fork. We won’t be saying goodbye to a classic sub sandwich, but that doesn’t mean the chip bag version can’t enter the regular rotation, too.
