Ukrainian presidential adviser on defense technology development Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov says new electronic warfare systems designed to counter jet-powered Shahed drones are now being tested.
Why the mesh network is the key challenge
According to Flash, during a recent meeting, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identified countering jet-powered Shahed drones as one of Ukraine's top defense priorities.
"Jet-powered Shaheds are indeed a serious challenge for our air defense. But they become most dangerous when operating in real-time through a mesh network," the adviser explained.
What was tested
"Today I spent the day at a testing range, where we evaluated different EW solutions for disrupting mesh networks," Flash said.
According to him, EW manufacturers, with support from the Brave1 defense innovation cluster and the Electronic Warfare Directorate of Ukraine's General Staff, are making progress in technologies capable of jamming the control channels used by Shahed drones through mesh-network radio modems.
What comes next
"I know how and with what the enemy will respond to our EW systems. And we will respond to their response. Welcome to the world of technology warfare," the presidential adviser concluded.
Earlier, defense experts predicted that Ukraine's military would increasingly rely on jet-powered interceptor drones to destroy jet-powered Shaheds as the speed of Russian strike drones continues to increase.
At the same time, Ukrainian defense companies are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence and machine vision into unmanned platforms, allowing them to bypass Russian electronic warfare systems more effectively.
In addition, Ukraine has developed the world's first autonomous quadcopter interceptor drone, LITAVR, capable of taking off, tracking, and destroying aerial targets without pilot intervention during flight.
