We have a winner!

Whether you like to put bread and butter pickle chips on sandwiches or burgers, use them as a salad topping, or simply eat them straight from the jar with a fork, odds are you want to buy the ones that taste the best.

To find out what popular store-bought bread and butter pickles have the best flavor for every use, we conducted a taste test of nine popular brands available at grocery stores around the South and selected a winner.

How We Tested

To conduct this taste test, we put slices of each of the nine pickles onto plates so editors could taste them without seeing the jars or any of the packaging. Testers tasted the pickles by themselves to form their opinion on the taste.

Each pickle was ranked on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. After tasting all of the bread and butter pickles, testers were then tasked with choosing their overall favorite.

The Contenders

  • Mt. Olive Bread & Butter Chips
  • Market Pantry Bread & Butter Chips
  • Good & Gather Organic Bread & Butter Pickle Chips
  • Great Gherkins Sweet Bread & Butter Sliced Pickles
  • Trader Joe’s Organic Sweet Bread & Butter Pickles
  • Publix Bread & Butter Chips
  • Vlasic Bread & Butter Chips
  • Bubbies Bread & Butter Chips
  • Great Value Bread & Butter Chips

How Each Brand Ranked

Mt. Olive Bread & Butter Chips

Testers were quick to note that they loved the balance of sweet and sour flavors Mt Olive’s Bread & Butter Chips offered. Editors also noted that this chip was a little thinner than others in the test. It was also chosen by a couple editors as their overall favorite from the group.

Market Pantry Bread & Butter Chips

Overall, most comments about Market Pantry’s Bread & Butter Chips noted that they were on the sweeter side. While some testers liked the sweetness, others thought they were too sweet. An editor who chose this brand as their overall favorite shared, “They taste like the homemade kind my grandparents bought when they visited over the summer.”

Good & Gather Organic Bread & Butter Pickle Chips

A few testers noted that they liked the crunch of Target’s Good & Gather Bread & Butter Pickle Chips, but notes about the flavor profile were much less consistent. One tester picked this brand as their favorite bread and butter pickle for topping sandwiches specifically.

Great Gherkins Sweet Bread & Butter Sliced Pickles

Great Gherkins is ALDI’s store brand of bread and butter pickles, and many testers thought they were too sweet. Others were off-put by the texture, noting they were missing a good crunch. A couple who didn’t find them to be too sweet found the flavor to be nice and bold.

Trader Joe’s Organic Sweet Bread & Butter Pickles

The first thing most testers noticed about the bread and butter pickles from Trader Joe’s was that they have the “best crunch of the bunch.” Editors were also pleased with the taste and freshness of the pickle after getting past the initial impression of the crunch. “Feels very versatile,” said one comment. “Could be enjoyed on its own or on a burger.”

Publix Bread & Butter Chips

Most testers noted that the bread and butter chips from Publix were more savory than other brands in the test. No editors who participated in the taste test chose this pickle as their overall favorite, but several liked the amount of crunch this bread and butter pickle offers.

Vlasic Bread & Butter Chips

Out of all of the bread and butter pickles in the taste test, editors all agreed that the Vlasic chips were more on the savory and sour side than any other brand. This is another pickle that was not chosen by any testers as their top choice.

Bubbies Bread & Butter Chips

A common theme testers all shared about the pickle chips from Bubbies is that they don’t have a classic bread and butter flavor. One editor even described it as a being in between a dill and bread and butter flavor. A couple comments also noted that it would be great for snacking.

Great Value Bread & Butter Chips

Walmart’s Great Value brand of bread and butter pickle chips was not chosen by any testers as their overall favorite and its overall rating fell towards the bottom of the group. One tester did note that because of its tanginess and acidity, that it would be good with charcuterie.

Though a few editors selected other brands as their overall favorite, when it came to the overall rating, Trader Joe’s Organic Sweet Bread & Butter Pickles won by a landslide. The average rating for these bread and butter pickle chips was almost an entire point higher than every other pickle in the test. Their unmatched crunchiness, flavor, and freshness won over the editors who participated in our taste test.
