ANN ARBOR, MI — It’s not uncommon to unearth some nice landscaping rocks when digging in Ann Arbor.
But one local homebuilder discovered the mother lode while prepping to build new condos just north of downtown.
Doug Selby of Volta Homes said the large boulder that now sits in front of The Bridge, a four-unit condo building nearing completion at 530 N. Division St., was discovered under the driveway a few winters ago. It measures several feet around.
Selby said it weighs about 4,000 pounds, as it was at the limit of what the skid steer that pulled it up could lift.
He decided to make it part of the front yard landscaping, now surrounded by flowers and other plants, as well as another large rock that was dug up on the site.
“That’s the biggest one I ever dug up,” one of the crew members can be heard saying in Selby’s video of the boulder being unearthed.
The Bridge recently became the first condo or apartment building in the state of Michigan to receive PHIUS Zero design certification from the Passive House Institute US for eco-friendly, net-zero energy design.
Three of the four high-end condos have sold and are expected to be finished soon. One with three bedrooms is still for sale at nearly $2 million.
