Vallejo police officers shot and killed a suspect in a carjacking on Monday afternoon, according to police and multiple media reports.
Authorities said police received a call about a reported carjacking just after noon on the 400 block of Ryder Street.
About an hour later, police tracked a suspect to the area of Mahogany Drive and Broadway Street, according to ABC7 news and Vallejo police.
On Mahogany Drive, the suspect refused to stop for police and became trapped in the dense alleyway behind an auto body shop, the news station reported. The suspect was reportedly killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. Tuesday morning, Police identified the man as Rommel Delfin Querol, a 44-year-old Vallejo resident.
"The driver of the vehicle immediately fired upon our officers," Vallejo police Sgt. Rashad Hollis said at a Monday evening press conference. "The officers discharged their firearms, striking the driver at least once."
Footage from an ABC7 helicopter showed a car with several bullet holes and a massive police presence in the area, which is north of downtown Vallejo. Police posted on X at about 2:40 p.m. that residents should avoid the area until further notice "due to police activity."
Vallejo police said they gave medical aid until paramedics arrived and pronounced Querol dead at the scene.
The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident while an independent investigator and the Vallejo Police Department's Critical Incident Review Board will separately examine the department's response.
The two officers involved have been placed on leave per the police department's officer-involved shooting protocol. Police said neither of the officers were injured.
Vallejo police said they would hold a town hall in the next one to two weeks to provide more information.
