A US defense company has just unveiled a new supersonic interceptor designed to counter the growing threat of hostile drones, in a bid to address the growing demand for more effective defenses against mass UAV attacks.
Called Buckler, the system was developed by Texas-based X-Bow Systems, a non-traditional producer of solid rocket motors (SRMs), sub-orbital launch solutions, and defense technologies. It has already completed field testing.
According to the company, the interceptor is built to counter Group 3 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Group 3 drones generally weigh between 56 and 1,320 lbs, and operate at altitudes below 18,000 feet with speeds under 250 knots.
Group 3 drones are used for reconnaissance and strike missions. X-Bow Systems said that Buckler combines high-speed performance with a design built for large-scale production. It is intended to help militaries defend against more frequent drone attacks at lower cost.
High speed defense
Drones have become increasingly common in modern conflicts. Large swarms of low-cost UAVs are challenging traditional air defense systems, while, at the same time, military planners warn that costly interceptors are not a sustainable solution.
To tackle the issue, X-Bow Systems developed the Buckler interceptor. It is priced under USD 100,000. It recently completed a successful flight test that proved its propulsion system and overall flight performance. The campaign also included static-fire tests of the solid rocket motor and igniter.
X-Bow Systems officials believe that the successful tests move Buckler closer to operational use. The tests also support the growing global demand for novel counter-drone systems.
Buckler uses a vertically integrated design. X-Bow manufactures both the airframe and solid rocket motor in-house. This allows the company to control not only the production, but also the quality and supply. It further reduces reliance on external suppliers.
Solid rocket motors have emerged as a significant bottleneck across the defense industry as demand for missiles and interceptors continues to increase. However, the firm said that its in-house production supports faster manufacturing growth.
Responding to threats
X-Bow said Buckler was designed for modern aerial warfare. The company added that it already operates fixed and deployable manufacturing systems, which could support multiple defense programs.
Jason Hundley, X-Bow founder and chief executive officer (CEO), said that relying on expensive interceptors to defeat low-cost threats is not a sustainable strategy. “You can’t win a war of attrition trading million-dollar interceptors against thousand-dollar threats,” he added.
“Buckler has flown, it comes in under USD 100,000, and we build its airframe and propulsion ourselves – the part of the industrial base that is so stressed by today’s munitions demands,” Hundley concluded in a press release. “This is our answer to the call from the US and its allies: affordable capability, at scale.”
The drone was officially introduced during the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK. It was showcased it to military customers. The firm also plans to exhibit Buckler at the 2026 Space & Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, as it continues discussions with potential defense partners and customers.
“As the nation rebuilds its stockpiles, X-Bow delivers affordable mass for the battlefield, combat-ready RATO motors fielded today, and propulsion for next-generation hypersonic and strategic programs,” the firm said.
