WASHINGTON - Eos Energy Enterprises has been selected to provide long-duration energy storage technology for the Trump administration’s Golden Dome missile defense initiative under a new partnership with the Department of War.
The announcement of the deal last week marked an early contracting milestone for infrastructure supporting the administration’s proposed nationwide missile defense shield.
The Pittsburgh-based company said its American-made zinc battery technology will be deployed initially at a critical defense installation as a prototype designed to strengthen power resilience for military operations supporting the Golden Dome program.
President Donald Trump highlighted the award during Sen. Dave McCormick’s Defense and National Security Summit in Carlisle, Pa., saying Eos had entered into a multi-million-dollar partnership with the Department of War.
“Eos in Pittsburgh just agreed to a multi-million-dollar partnership with the Department of War to build energy storage technology in support of our Golden Dome missile defense,” Trump said. “We’re building a golden dome over our country and it’s going to be a very effective one.”
Company officials said the initial deployment will use Eos’ Z3 zinc-based long-duration energy storage system, which is intended to provide uninterrupted electrical power for defense infrastructure during extended operations or disruptions.
The project is structured as a prototype that could be expanded as defense requirements increase, according to the company.
Joe Mastrangelo, Eos chief executive officer, said the award validates the company’s strategy of manufacturing advanced battery technology in the United States.
“Today, we’re proving that America can still manufacture advanced technology at scale and deliver for our nation’s most critical missions,” Mastrangelo said.
Michelle Buczkowski, the company’s chief administration officer, said Eos spent the past year establishing compliance requirements and technical qualifications needed for Department of War contracts.
“This award reflects that work,” Buczkowski said. “Eos is ready to deliver for the department’s mission at scale.”
The company said its batteries are manufactured and assembled in Pittsburgh using a non-flammable aqueous zinc chemistry with approximately 91% domestic content and a predominantly U.S.-based supply chain. Eos said the system complies with federal defense procurement requirements governing domestic sourcing.
Company officials said reliable electrical power has become increasingly important for military facilities and other critical infrastructure as the department seeks greater resilience against potential disruptions.
Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., said the project would strengthen military infrastructure while supporting domestic manufacturing.
“The Golden Dome should be built on American technology,” McCormick said. “Eos’ technology will help secure the power infrastructure our military depends on, while creating good jobs right here in Pennsylvania.”
Eos said it is expanding production at its Thorn Hill manufacturing facility near Pittsburgh, where a second battery production line recently entered commercial operation. The company said the expansion is intended to support a long-term goal of producing up to 8 gigawatt-hours of energy storage capacity annually and creating approximately 1,000 jobs in Allegheny County.
The Golden Dome initiative is the Trump administration’s proposed layered missile defense network intended to protect the United States against ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missile threats through an integrated system of land-, sea- and space-based sensors and interceptors.
The administration has committed billions of dollars in initial funding for the program. However, outside analysts, including the Congressional Budget Office, have estimated the overall cost could range from hundreds of billions to more than $1 trillion depending on the scope of the system.
The Department of War has not announced when the prototype installation will become operational or identified the defense facility where the initial deployment will occur. Company officials said additional phases of the program would depend on future defense requirements and government decisions.
