Trump's approval rating dropped as prices climbed, and since he ran on the promise of lowering prices and improving affordability, the high prices the country currently faces might prompt voters to elect Democrats, not Republicans, in the November elections.
Trump's message to grocery stores and retailers
On July 19, Trump posted on Truth Social and praised Giant Eagle for lowering prices across more than 300 products during the summer. "Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for hardworking families," he wrote.
Trump also called on additional retailers to lower prices, too. "Other grocery chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart," he wrote.
1. Walmart and Sam's Club
On July 6, Walmart announced discounted prices on thousands of its products, including grocery products. For example, corn on the cob was $0.68 but has been reduced to $0.25 each, and fresh red cherries have been reduced from $11.18 to $5.63 per 2.25-pound bag. Other popular products, including Lay's classic potato chips, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Great Value ice cream, and disposable paper plates, have also been discounted.
Sam's Club has announced it is lowering prices on more than 250 products, such as Member's Mark bone-in chicken wings, beef hot dogs, ground beef, and bone-in pork back ribs.

2. Giant Eagle
On July 9, Giant Eagle announced price reductions on more than 300 products lasting through September 7. The grocery chain's "On Sale This Season" campaign features price reductions that average 10%.
The campaign includes savings on some highly popular essentials. For example, Certified Angus Beef 75% lean ground beef, which is regularly $6.69 per pound, is discounted to $5.99 per pound. Green and red seedless grapes, normally $2.99 per pound, are $2.49 per pound. The sale also includes discounts on Cheez-Its, Giant Eagle American cheese, JIF peanut butter, Smucker's Jelly, and Evian Water.
3. Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop announced in May that it lowered prices at its 137 New York and New Jersey stores. The price cuts affected products throughout every department and included customer favorites that are frequently purchased.
Yellow tags highlight the new everyday price and the previous price, making it easy to spot these discounts in stores. Among the products with new, lower prices are Nathan's Beef Franks, which were $7.99 and are now $5.79, a 28% decrease. Stop & Shop also cut the price of its whole rotisserie chicken from $7.99 to $6.99. The retailer has also reduced the price on products like Tropicana orange juice, its freshly baked bagels, Acme smoked salmon, its hand-decorated 7-inch single layer cake, Bumble Bee tuna, and more.
4. Kroger
While Kroger hasn't announced price cuts just yet, Kroger Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran has spoken about incorporating price cuts into the grocery chain's growth strategy. Foran told Bloomberg News that Kroger plans to implement lower prices throughout its product categories.
The price cuts are part of an effort to stand out against competitors like Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe's. According to Foran, Kroger may import merchandise directly and use technology to reduce its expenses, allowing for the price cuts.
