If you've ever bounced your way down a rocky trail, you know off-roading does more than just jostle your passengers. Every rut and rock makes the frame flex and twist as each wheel does its own thing. That's par for the course, especially with ladder-frame trucks and SUVs built to take a beating off the pavement.

That twisting, however, creates a new challenge for electrified vehicles. Instead of just a gas tank, they've got a massive, heavy battery pack slung under the floor. The frame is designed to flex all day, but the battery? Not so much. It really doesn't like being bent out of shape over and over.

Toyota believes it has found a way to reduce that stress. The company filed a patent (USPTO no. 20260200306, if you're curious) for a new underbody setup that lets the frame twist without bullying the battery pack. And it's not just for rock-crawling monsters – this could help pickups, commercial rigs, body-on-frame SUVs, and even hybrids that spend their lives dodging potholes.

Let the Frame Twist, Not the Battery

Most EV batteries today are bolted down tight to the frame, which is fine if you stick to smooth pavement. But start flexing the chassis, and those bending forces eventually make their way into the battery – never a good thing.

Instead of clamping the battery down at every corner, Toyota’s idea supports most of it from the middle of the frame, where things stay pretty calm. Then, slap a rotating joint – think of it like a big hinge – on one end to let the frame do its twisty thing without dragging the battery along for the ride.

So when the frame gets all twisty over rough ground, the joint just spins, and the battery stays happy and straight. That means less stress on the battery, but the truck still gets to keep its off-road flex.

As a bonus, this setup could also free up space under the floor, making it easier to squeeze in bigger batteries without totally reworking the rest of the truck.

A Practical Idea Beyond Off-Roading

Sure, it's easy to picture this on a trail-ready pickup or SUV, like maybe for a future next-generation electric Toyota Hilux or even a plug-in Tacoma, but the idea goes way beyond that. Delivery vans, commercial trucks, and anything with a ladder frame could use a break from beating up their pricey battery packs year after year.

Of course, like most patents, this is just an idea on paper for now. Automakers love to file patents for all sorts of wild tech, and plenty never see the light of day. Still, it's a cool peek at how Toyota is thinking about the next wave of hybrids and EVs – even if we won't see it in showrooms just yet.
