Steve Williams, the legendary caddie for Tiger Woods, watched intently as Ryan Fox claimed the Claret Jug.
Williams, the famous caddie who worked alongside 15-time major winner Woods for 12 years, from 1999 to 2011, and has also previously worked with Fox, is known for not watching a lot of golf. But his personal connection with Fox triggered the desire to change a habit and watch the 39-year-old win the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
"I’ve had a little bit to do with Ryan, right from his amateur days through to turning professional, and I’ve caddied for him several times at the New Zealand Open," Williams told Golf Digest. "When you know somebody personally, it’s emotional, for sure."

Fox dialled in on the 18th, telling his current caddie, Dean Smith, on the tee box he was going for the win. He said he'd pay the price if it all went wrong.
His former caddie, Williams, spoke to Fox before the tournament and gave him his full backing heading into Royal Birkdale.
“I just love encouraging the guy. I’ve told him many times, ‘You’ve got the game [to win a major], you’ve got all it takes.’ You just fill the guy with belief and eventually [he’ll win]," Williams said.
"I just think he’s an absolutely fantastic person, and he’s an unbelievable player, and it’s just fitting that he’s won the Open Championship.”
Fox was shocked himself, and held his head in hands in the recorders' tent before calling his family.
"I don't really know what to think at the moment,” said Fox while hoisting the trophy.
"I've got a lot of people to thank. First of all, my family, my wife and kids are in Florida at the moment. I spoke to my kids last night, and they said, Bring back a trophy. I think this is a pretty cool one to bring back for them.
"My family back in New Zealand and all my supporters back there, I know it's been a long night for them, but I'm glad it was worthwhile.

"My team, you guys put in so much hard work, and I wouldn't be here without you guys.
"The R&A, to Royal Birkdale, to everyone who's made this event what it is, just an unbelievable week. The golf course was fantastic. The English weather was fantastic.
"You guys out there were fantastic. The support was amazing. This is pretty cool. I'm sorry if I've forgotten anyone, but thank you very much."
