Looking for a way to make your kitchen feel a little cozier and more lived-in? Try adding a lamp to your counter! I've noticed that more and more designers are integrating table lamps into their kitchen designs. "I love the idea of making the kitchen feel more integrated with the home," says Audra Samnotra of Social Swan Decor. "One way I like to do that is by introducing furniture elements into the kitchen, like lamps, art, decor, and footed cabinetry that feel cohesive with the design ethos. Lamps especially add texture, color, and warmth." Want more reasons to add one into your own kitchen? I spoke to a few designers about why and how you should do it in your home.

They Make Great Night Lights

"In a kitchen, we like to plan for three types of lighting: general, task, and accent. Low-glare ceiling lights are usually best for general lighting, and undercabinet lights are great task lights," says Paul McManus, president at McManus Kitchen and Bath.

"Accent lights can be done with sconces, pendants, and picture lights, but another nice way to add some accent lighting is with a small lamp that sits on the counter," he says. "Accent lights make nice 'night lights' so you don't have to turn on all the ceiling lights just to get a quick drink from the fridge. This is especially nice in an open kitchen where turning all the lights may disturb someone watching TV in the living room."

They Make Your Kitchen Instantly Cozier

"Adding a small lamp to the kitchen counter is a simple designer trick that instantly makes the space feel cozier and more welcoming," says Elana Mendelson of Elana Designs."Kitchens are usually lit for specific tasks, so a lamp introduces softer, layered, ambient light at eye level, helping the room feel calm and warm, especially in the evenings."

They Can Elevate Other Details in Your Kitchen

"My tip is to style a small lamp in a little nook on your kitchen counter. That could be next to some recipe books or beautiful mugs that you often reach for," says Joyce Huston, co-founder and lead interior designer at Decorilla.

"Pay attention to the small details, too, when picking out a kitchen lamp. Lean on your color palette to find the perfect lamp, whether that’s decorative detailing in the lampshade that picks up the tertiary tones of your kitchen’s palette or choosing a lamp with a brass base to match the cabinet handles and other fixtures," she says. "Consistency across metallic finishes is also super important, considering that metal tones stand out and can feel chaotic when there’s no continuity."

They Make Everyday Tasks More Special

"Kitchens are the heart of the home that have constant activity throughout the day. Adding a lamp to turn on for morning coffee or late-night dishwashing lets these special everyday moments feel a little more special," explains Becca Meyer of BB Meyer Design. "A lamp signifies that the space is more than just a task area; it’s a gathering space for families and friends to make life’s special memories. Intentional lamp placement shows the thought behind the space and welcomes you in."

There Are Tons of Ways to Personalize Your Kitchen Lamp

"If the best location for your lamp isn't near an outlet, try a rechargeable option," suggests Shannon Cassell of Shannon Cassell Interiors. "A cute, inexpensive lamp can be made interesting by adding a custom shade. Shades are available in anything from luxury designer fabrics to marbleized paper on Etsy. It's a low-cost investment for a unique piece!"
