Traditional walking tacos just got an upgrade.

Traditional walking tacos just got an upgrade.

Walking tacos, taco in a bag, taco salads, whichever you call them, are a classic American meal simply due to their ease, lack of cleanup, and delicious flavor. Often served at sports games, barbecues, and potlucks, walking tacos are the definition of an easy meal. All you need to do is cook up some meat, mix it with your favorite taco chips and toppings, and stir—this meal is ready in 10 minutes without any dirty dishes.

While we love the iconic taco in a bag, another version of the easy dish has piqued the interest of over 1.8 million people online. In a TikTok video, Kelly Pettit (@yellowbellykelly on TikTok) shows how easy it is to put an Italian twist on the classic walking taco.

How to Make an Italian Sub in a Bag

The basics of a walking taco are straightforward—chips, meat, and toppings. But the type of ingredients you use makes all the difference when deciding what style of meal you’ll have. Pettit swaps out the taco ingredients for more tangy, Italian-inspired ones.

To make an Italian sub in a bag, start by cutting slices of salami and provolone cheese into bite-sized pieces. For extra meat, try adding pieces of prosciutto or pancetta. Next, chop up your favorite sandwich toppings to mix with your meat, cheese, and shredded lettuce. Pettit uses olives and pepperoncinis, but feel free to add any other toppings like tomatoes, basil, and onion.

In a separate bowl, make the dressing by mixing mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, olive brine, salt, pepper, oregano, and olive oil. Pour the dressing over your meat-and-topping mixture to create the base of your Italian sub in a bag. Finally, crunch up some salt and vinegar chips, and pour the mixture into the chip bag (or use the chips to scoop the mixture for Italian-style nachos).

Prep a big batch of the Italian base before a picnic or barbecue and have guests choose their own toppings for an easy and cleanup-free summer meal.

Other Meal-In-a-Bag Ideas

While the Italian sub in a bag is the ultimate walking taco variation for summer, there are plenty of other ways to put a twist on the classic meal. For a ham and cheese version, mix cheddar or kettle chips and ham with a mayonnaise-based dressing. For a Caesar salad in a bag, mix lettuce, cheese, chicken, and Caesar dressing with a bag of salt and vinegar chips. Or, if you want a warm, hearty meal, swap out the traditional taco meat and toppings for a meat and bean chili.
