Established in 1933, the Empire Mine in South Dakota was made up of the former Golden Slipper (discovered in 1911) and the Forest City (discovered in 1893) mines before being bought out and re-named by a New York owner as the Empire Mine.
Intended to mine gold in the Black Hills, the mine ceased operations in the early 1940s. Like many mines of its time, the Empire Mine eventually ran dry and was abandoned.
