It seems we’re quite close to getting our first real look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's highly anticipated expansion, Songs of the Past. The DLC will be shown during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live in late August, which will be hosted by show creator Geoff Keighley.
On Tuesday, CD Projekt Red took to X to announce The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past's presence at Opening Night Live, telling fans to mark their calendars for "a glimpse" of the expansion.
While at first glance it seems a bit odd that CD Projekt Red is working on a significant add-on for a game released in 2015, Songs of the Past makes more sense when you consider The Witcher 3 has sold over 65 million copies, putting it in the top 10 highest-selling games of all-time. That’s quite an install base.
After CD Projekt confirmed in a 2025 earnings call that The Witcher 3 was receiving “new content,” Songs of the Past was officially announced in May as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration of the base game's previous add-on, Blood and Wine.
Details around the expansion are a bit scarce, but we know that it’s being worked on by the game’s original studio, CD Projekt Red, alongside Fool’s Theory. It’s headed for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2027.
“When it comes to the scope. I’d say it’s actually a bit closer to Blood and Wine, but this is super-subjective,” said CD Projekt co-CEO Michal Nowakowski in a financial earnings call. “It really depends on how you’re going to play — what’s your playthrough. But we’re definitely making a proper big expansion, is the message I would send out there.” For context, Blood and Wine takes most players between 25 and 40 hours to complete.
As for how the expansion ties into the upcoming The Witcher 4, which still doesn't have a firm release window, Nowakowski described Songs of the Past as a “reminder” about the franchise rather than a direct prologue. The add-on will once again follow Geralt of Rivia instead of Ciri, who is taking over for her mentor in the upcoming game. The expansion was originally slated for 2026 but was held back to “achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint,” as Nowakowski put it. Considering how CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 initially launched, it's probably best that the studio takes its time.
