As a casual record collector and appreciator, I was immediately smitten by Tiny Vinyl’s, well, tiny vinyls, when they launched last year. Each 4-inch record features one song on each side, with a wide range of musicians, ranging from Rihanna and Blink-182 to John Williams with his “Star Wars” score. We featured them as a stocking stuffer idea for those who love music, particularly in a physical format. Now the brand is back with the next logical step: a Tiny Vinyl Player designed specifically for these itty-bitty records.
Tiny Vinyl Player
You can play Tiny Vinyl’s records on most manual turntables, so the brand’s player isn’t required to listen. But they don’t work on some automatic players, including the popular Audio-Technica AT-LP60X that I use. The Tiny Vinyl player, measuring 10 by 6 by 5 inches, is designed solely for Tinyl Vinyl records. The all-in-one solution is a clamshell-style player that opens to reveal the platter and controls, as well as room to store a handful of sleeves on the left side. It’s powered by USB-C and comes with a wall adapter, so you have everything you need to get started out of the box (minus the records, of course).
The Tiny Vinyl Player has built-in speakers, but they leave much to be desired. They don’t sound particularly great—playback is hollow with practically no bass—or get very loud, but that’s not wholly unexpected from any all-in-one solution, and especially not at this price. While simple playback is likely fine for kids or those who appreciate the novelty of the whole setup, Tiny Vinyl thankfully provides two options for hooking up to more capable speakers. There’s a standard 3.5mm audio jack on the back for plugging in speakers you already have and Bluetooth for connecting wirelessly. I was able to hook up to both options in seconds. While the audio quality will be dependent on the speaker you’re connecting to, you’ll undoubtedly get a better listening experience with pretty much any external option.
Crate
2x2 Frame
In addition to the Player, Tiny Vinyl has a new storage Crate and 2x2 Frame for storing and showcasing your collection. The crate, which holds up to 30 records, is the same length and width as the record player so it fits perfectly underneath it. The frame holds four record covers and comes with plastic sleeves to protect the records themselves. They’re fun accessories for collectors.
The Tiny Vinyl Player isn’t a necessary purchase for those with setups that can already play the little records. It is, however, a great way to introduce kids to the joy of vinyl and a fun gift for someone who likes the idea of collecting and playing the records without committing to a full setup.
