You’ve probably heard that regularly chewing sugary gum promotes cavities, but new research suggests that this dental villain may have surprising benefits for blood pressure. However, this potential perk of sugary gum is relevant only for one specific condition and has more to do with how it affects your mouth chemistry than the gum itself.
How Gum Affects Your Oral Acidity
A 2026 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology investigated how oral acidity affects the body’s ability to convert dietary nitrate into blood-pressure-lowering compounds.
Participants drank a dose of nitrate-rich beetroot juice and then chewed either sugar-containing gum or sugar-free gum. The results showed that chewing sugar-containing gum after beetroot juice made saliva more acidic than chewing sugar-free gum did.
That shift in acidity translated into a much more efficient conversion of nitrate to nitric oxide.
Understanding the Nitrate-Nitrite-Nitric Oxide Pathway
Nitrates are naturally occurring compounds made of nitrogen and oxygen that have potential health benefits (including for blood pressure). When you eat dietary nitrate sources, like beets, spinach, or arugula, the nitrates in them don’t do much on their own.
About a quarter of the nitrate you absorb gets concentrated in your saliva and secreted back onto the surface of your tongue, where it comes into contact with specific bacteria living in the grooves at the back of your tongue. These bacteria carry an enzyme that human cells don’t have, which reduces nitrate into nitrite, the first and most essential step in activating the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway.
Once swallowed, nitrite is further converted, partly in the acidic environment of the stomach and partly in the bloodstream, into nitric oxide (NO), a colorless gas molecule that tells the smooth muscle lining of your blood vessels to relax. As vessels widen, blood can flow through them more freely, and blood pressure drops.
The success of this pathway depends on the right factors and conditions. Without the right bacteria in your mouth doing their job, most of the nitrate from the foods you eat passes through your body unconverted and inactive.
Study Findings
In the study, participants had about 45% more nitrite in their saliva after chewing sugary gum than after chewing sugar-free gum. This also carried through to the bloodstream, where circulating nitrite levels were roughly 25% higher with sugary gum.
Most importantly, blood pressure dropped further with sugary gum, the top number (systolic) by 3 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and the bottom number (diastolic) by 2 mmHg compared to the sugar-free gum. The effect, however, wasn’t permanent and faded over several hours.
Real-World Applications
It’s important to be clear about what this study was (and wasn’t) designed to show. “It was not designed as an experiment to study blood pressure control per se,” Andrew Webb, FRCP, PhD, FBPhS, the study’s lead author and clinical senior lecturer at King’s College London, told Verywell.
“This study was designed as a mechanistic experiment to test a fundamental question over the acute effect of making the saliva more acidic on the dietary nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway following beetroot juice ingestion, and, in turn, on one of the key effects of the pathway—blood pressure,” Webb said.
The findings showed substantial activation of the pathway and a meaningful effect in lowering blood pressure. However, these effects were measured over just six hours and appeared to fade toward the end of that window.
Long-Term Effects
There’s also a broader question of whether the blood pressure effects hold up over time. “Acute effects can be different from the longer-term or chronic effects of interventions,” Webb said.
Indirect evidence suggests this may also be true for this intervention. Ingesting beetroot juice daily over 15 days has been shown to decrease salivary acidity, and chronic nitrate intake also appears to reshape the oral microbiome, the bacteria responsible for converting nitrate to nitrite in the first place.
“Whilst chewing sugary gum could be used to temporarily enhance the pathway, we are not recommending it as a general approach to manage blood pressure,” Webb said.
The size of the effect matters too. The roughly 3 mmHg/2 mmHg drop in blood pressure is real but modest, especially given standard treatment. “Antihypertensive [medications] typically lower blood pressure by about 5-10 mmHg systolic pressure, though sometimes more, and usually for longer periods,” Webb notes.
Limitations of Chewing Gum for Blood Pressure
The most obvious catch with the intervention itself is that it involves added sugar. “A major limitation, and another reason not to recommend its use for blood pressure, is the sugar—and potential harmful effects to teeth and gums in particular, as well as increasing blood glucose levels,” Webb said.
The amount of sugar in a single piece of gum is relatively modest, about 6 g, though it would add up with repeated use.
Where Webb sees genuine potential is in exercise performance rather than blood pressure management. Dietary nitrate has already been shown across multiple studies to enhance exercise performance. Activating the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway further via salivary acidity could amplify that effect.
