Essence Fest, the crown for Black culture's biggest event is up for grabs. NC A&T State University expects 200K visitors to attend Homecoming!

The 100-day countdown is officially on for the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth!” North Carolina A&T State University—the nation’s largest HBCU—is gearing up for a historic centennial celebration, and a mind-boggling 200,000 visitors are expected to crash Greensboro this fall. Watch out, Essence Fest, the crown for Black culture’s biggest event is officially up for grabs.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the state’s first public college for African Americans, announced the countdown to its annual homecoming celebrating 100 years of excellence, and it’s projected to be the biggest Black cultural reunion of the year.

“Homecoming is special at every college and university, but A&T homecoming is in a league of its own,” Chancellor James R. Martin II said. “This year’s homecoming parade, football game and the homecoming hip-hop concert will all take place on Saturday, Oct. 31 – Halloween – taking the excitement to a whole new level.”

After drawing 132,000 attendees in 2024, NC A&T’s homecoming shattered expectations last fall with nearly 175,000 visitors. This year? The surge continues, heading toward a staggering 200,000-person turnout.

The highly-anticipated event has grown so massive, it’s no longer limited to a week of events throughout the Piedmont Triad—the 12-county region in central North Carolina, anchored by Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Tamara Michel Josserand confirmed the celebration will also feature additional events and activities through the end of the calendar year.

The homecoming celebration includes a pep rally, concerts, an enormous alumni dinner, community parties and, of course, the big game, the university announced.

The scale of what’s about to hit North Carolina is almost unreal. University leadership revealed during a media briefing that the expected crowd will be 14 times larger than the entire student body, temporarily expanding Greensboro’s population by over 60%. As a massive wave of 200,000 supporters floods the city, the historic homecoming is set to pump an eye-watering $50 million directly into the local economy.

To put the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth’s” (GHOE) centennial numbers into perspective, look no further than Black culture’s annual go-to event, Essence Fest. While Essence Fest brings upwards of 350,000 attendees to New Orleans each year—with a record-setting 550,000 in 2022, according to the Sentinel-Tribune—NC A&T is expecting a staggering 200,000 people to descend upon a single college campus alone.

“You only turn 100 once, and we plan to make the most of it this fall,” said Alumni Relations Associate Vice Chancellor Crystal W. Boyce. “As we celebrate a century of memories, achievements, and Aggie pride, we look forward to bringing generations of Aggies together for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

The big celebration is set for Sunday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Nov. 1, with events scheduled at scores of locations around Greensboro.
