Since it arrived in 1955, the company has sold more than 108 million units of this engine — roughly equivalent to one for almost every single person in the Philippines (population: approximately 114 million).

The small-block Chevy V8 has powered everything from race cars, to boats, to trucks, but it all started in the mid-fifties. It was in 1955 that GM and Chevy launched the original small-block V8, the 265 CID — simple, light, and, at 150 lbs lighter than comparable engines, the lightest V8 on the market at the time. Chief engineer Ed Cole was determined that the new engine would be neither over-complicated nor expensive to maintain; he recognized the long-term potential of his design from the very beginning.
This Revolutionary Engine Was Developed In Just A Few Months
The engine was designed in just three months, and 15 months after the design work had begun, the tools were ready for pilot production. The engine used a number of clever ideas to make it simple and cheap to manufacture. The intake manifold was one casting that incorporated a number of features and functions. The cylinder head could be placed on either side of the block simply by rotating it 180 degrees, saving costs and simplifying assembly.

The engine went to work in the likes of the Bel Air and the Corvette, the latter seeing serious power hikes in 1956, with up to 240 horsepower courtesy of two four-barrel carburetors and a high-lift camshaft. The sports car, which is seen by some as the best Corvette ever, is the last front-engined 'Vette. And while it didn't have a supercar-spec mid-engined layout, this is a hypercar in disguise.

The engine being developed, says Chevy, could power full-size trucks and SUVs, proving that small-blocks still have a place at the automotive table.
