It may be worth looking into what could be missing from your home's floors, like this durable material. After all, prevention is better than cure.

Home renovations can easily go wrong, and the structural integrity of the building itself is something that doesn't often cross our minds, unless there is an emergency or a serious issue arises. We're too busy living our everyday lives and focusing on more superficial dilemmas, such as how best to decorate the kitchen. Or, what are the best colors to incorporate into a living room? But it may be worth looking into what could be missing, or what could be added to help prolong the structure and durability of our houses. After all, prevention is better than cure. Steel beams aren't just for reinforcing ceilings; they are a material that could also be missing from your floors, too.

Steel beams are used in floors to distribute the weight of the building effectively, protecting a home from instability and any natural disasters that may occur. Your home may not feature steel beams, but wooden beams instead. Traditional wooden beams have been used in home building for centuries, but are far less durable and long-lasting than steel. So, let's look into the reasons you may need to introduce a steel beam to your floor and why this is a good idea for any future renovation projects.

Why steel beams are a good addition to your floors

Adding a steel beam to a current building is a major construction task. If your home is an older or period property, you may have started to experience uneven or sagging floors; this is due to the wooden structural beams becoming worn and rotten over time. A way to rectify this and to create a level floor is to replace the wooden beams with steel alternatives. For this, you are going to need to consult a structural engineer, who will be able to work out the weight and load that you require.

Another reason why you may need to add steel beams to your floors is if you are planning to build a second story. The addition of steel beams will allow for this extra weight, as well as offering many other benefits, too, including the fact that steel is heat- and weather-resistant, it's an eco-friendly material, it may save you from having to invest in other foundational work, and ultimately steel beams are safe and easy to install.

If you're building an extension and you love the industrial look, consider leaving your steel beams exposed. They not only have structural benefits, but can also be aesthetically pleasing, too.

I have been an appraiser for 10 years – these 6 upgrades immediately tank resale value

After a decade of walking through other people's homes with a clipboard and a tape measure, I've learned that good taste and good resale value are not the same thing. Homeowners often assume that spending more money automatically means their house is worth more, but appraisals don't work that way. Value comes from comparable sales, buyer demand, and how a home fits the expectations of its neighborhood, not from how much love or money went into a...
