When joining two tapered aluminum pipe thread fittings together, or even inserting a tapered pipe thread fitting into something like an aluminum automatic transmission case, always coat the fitting with pipe thread tape or sealing lube. Never dry test-fit, tapered aluminum fittings even lightly together by hand as the threads can easily gall. Galling is when material is transferred between the female and male threads. Once this occurs, even light assembly pressure is enough to damage the threads and potentially ruin the fittings. Always lubricate the threads before you test-fit them. The best lube is thread sealant or plumber’s tape.
While we’re on the subject, the correct way to wrap pipe thread is to wrap the tape around the male fitting clockwise as viewed from the end of the male thread. This prevents unwrapping the tape as the two parts are threaded together.
