The Detroit Tigers are fighting to save their season and apparently their ace. ESPN's Alden Gonzalez reported Tuesday the Tigers are likely to hold onto Tarik Skubal, but only if they keep winning and make a serious American League wild-card push.
Detroit got off to a dismal 22-38 start this season but has turned things around. A.J. Hinch's team has won 25 of its 40 games since the start of June and is 10-4 in July. Skubal, who missed six weeks due to elbow surgery, returned to the Tigers' rotation on June 13 and has given Detroit a necessary midseason spark.
A ninth-round pick in 2018, Skubal has developed into one of MLB's most dominant starters. The Seattle University product claimed back-to-back AL Cy Young awards in 2024 and 2025, winning the Triple Crown as well in '24.
Still, the Tigers could move on from Skubal if they run into a cold stretch before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Here's a look at which teams could acquire the 29-year-old lefty in the event that happens.
