At SEC Media Days this morning Kirby Smart provided an injury updates on a number of players. While most of those were pretty pedestrian, the update on transfer tailback Dante Dowdell is more serious.
Smart confirmed reports that Dowdell did indeed suffer a significant injury. The Top Dawg didn’t specify a timeline for a possible return, and also didn’t downplay the seriousness of the injury.
“The Dante Dowdell situation is tough,” Smart conceded . “I don’t know when he’ll be back. He had an off-campus accident back home during our break, and we’re praying for him and his family. We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we’re waiting to see.”
Reports from several other outlets indicated that Dowdell’s injury while riding an ATV, and that he is treating at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a world-renowned facility for head and spinal cord injury, an ominous sign. Coach Smart provided some details, saying “I don’t know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries.” Smart added that Dowdell is “out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year.”
Dowdell transferred in from Kentucky this offseason after rushing for 560 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Wildcats last in 2025. Dowdell spent the 2024 season with Nebraska and the 2023 season with Oregon and was looking to polish his NFL resume in Athens while splitting carries with Nate Frazier, Chauncey Bowens and others. It sounds like that goal may be on hold for now, if not permanently.
