The number of quotable lines from "Point Break" is endless. And while Hollywood and surfing have had a tepid relationship over the years, when the eventual cult classic danced across the silver screen in 1991, it was different. It was not, in the words of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis, who played a drug-dealing, beach-fight-starting punk named Tone, "a waste of time."
With square-jawed Patrick Swayze playing protagonist Bodhi, and Keanu Reeves bouncing back from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" in the role of laced-up FBI agent Johnny Utah, the film was set on the beach of Los Angeles ("Latigo ... nice pointbreak.") and details the exploits of the "Ex-Presidents," a gang of bank-robbing surfers that us their stolen funds to fuel their search for surf.
This summer, 35 years down the track, Resurgence Media Group, Saga Arts, and Fathom Entertainment have announced that Kathryn Bigelow's iconic 1991 action thriller will return to theaters nationwide on August 16 and August 19. The limited engagement will feature a brand-new 4K restoration, giving audiences the chance to experience one of surfing's most beloved Hollywood films on the big screen once again. "This anniversary release includes an exclusive introduction from San Clemente core lord Matt Archbold, who served as Patrick Swayze's surf double during production and helped coach Swayze, Reeves, Anthony Kiedis and other cast members before filming. In the new featurette, Archbold shares behind-the-scenes stories from the making of "Point Break" while reflecting on the themes of freedom, risk and surfing that have helped the film endure for 35 years.
Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow, "Point Break" stars Reeves as Johnny Utah, an ambitious young FBI agent tasked with infiltrating Southern California's surf scene after investigators suspect a crew of surfers may be behind a string of bank robberies committed by the masked Ex-Presidents. As Utah becomes immersed in Bodhi's world of chasing waves and living without limits, the line between duty and friendship begins to blur. You'll just have to watch to see how the debate about what spot's bigger, Bells or Waimea, plays out.
Alongside Reeves and Swayze, the cast includes Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros and Anthony Kiedis. The theatrical re-release is also being supported by a broad celebration across the surf and action sports community, with special editorial content and collaborations involving the World Surf League, SURFER Magazine, SURFER TV, FUEL TV, Men's Journal, Screen Rant, IGN and the U.S. Open of Surfing.
