Bazinga! Big Bang Theory fans have a new reason to look forward to Thursdays.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — a spinoff following a comic book store owner who accidentally launches “a multiverse Armageddon” after breaking a device built by Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) — premieres on Thursday, July 23, on HBO Max.
Though Kevin Sussman reprises his role as Stuart Bloom — alongside Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke — he has said fans shouldn’t expect more of the same.
“It’s not comparable to the original show,” he told TVLine in July 2026. “There’s no need to deal with comparisons to the original because it’s so different. It still has that Chuck Lorre DNA with the comedy, but it is definitely a different genre altogether.”

The first episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe airs on Thursday, July 23.
According to co-creator Bill Prady, fans will meet their reluctant hero at his same-old shop, the Comic Center of Pasadena. However, it might look a little different.
“We start in an alternate universe, but it would be contemporaneous with a continuous timeline, so it picks up years after [the events of The Big Bang Theory],” Prady told TVLine in July 2026. “We start in the wrong world with instructions on how to set things right. That is the mission.”
In addition to Stuart’s multidimensional quest, co-creator Zak Penn said the show’s inaugural installment is also a comment on multiverse shows, like Sheldon’s favorite series Alphas.
“Part of the subtext of the whole show is that it’s about shows like this,” Penn, who created Alphas, told TVLine. “So there’s a certain level of: The characters can’t really follow what’s going on after a while — like, it’s all getting too confusing — which, hopefully, we pull back from by the end of the season. But that’s a runner in the season.”
Though the spinoff isn’t a direct sequel to the original series, Sussman told TVLine that it does pick up where The Big Bang Theory left off in terms of his character’s personal life and romance with Denise (Lapkus).
“His life was just getting good again — and then, of course, the show stopped,” the actor said. “It definitely is cool to have a new beginning, where Stuart is becoming more of all of the things that he lacked in the original.”

There are 10 episodes in the first season of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
Unlike the half-hour timeframe typical of most sitcoms, the episodes will be much shorter, with the quickest wrapping up in just 15 minutes and the longest running 25 minutes.
Lorre told Deadline in July 2026 that the decision wasn’t due to any external constraints, but simply because they felt they had “successfully told the story.”
“To add would be padding, and padding, generally, is a hammock between important scenes, and why would we do that if there’s no real reason?” the co-creator said. “The historic length of a show is entirely arbitrary … So, why not just make the best show we can and hope the audience is entertained?”
