U.S. stock futures advanced on Monday, as the Dow Jones, Nasdaq 100, and S&P 500 indices rose, following Friday’s lower close.

The U.S. military launched a ninth straight night of strikes against Iran to protect critical oil shipping routes, with CENTCOM stating, "The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz."

As the U.S. troop death toll reached 17, President Donald Trump signaled the operation will persist, noting, "Iran has been very, very badly damaged. They’ve lost everything almost militarily."

While limited economic data is scheduled to be released this week, investors are expecting earnings results from companies like Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL, Tesla Inc. TSLA, General Motors Co. GM, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.55%, and the two-year bond was at 4.18%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool’s projections show markets pricing an 87.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve leaving the current interest rates unchanged during July’s meeting.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust SPY and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF QQQ, which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were higher in premarket on Monday. The SPY was up 0.44% at $746.53, while the QQQ advanced by 0.497% to $702.04.

Cues From Last Session

Energy stocks bucked the overall market trend to end higher on Friday, but most S&P 500 sectors closed in the red, led down by consumer discretionary, communication services, and information technology.

Insights From Analysts

Veteran strategist Ed Yardeni warns that a hidden tech wreck is underway beneath a calm market surface, cautioning that semiconductor equities face further downside. While the S&P 500 hovers near record highs, the iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX has plunged over 20% into bear market territory.

Yardeni observed that "The surface stayed calm while the engine broke," noting how international margin calls and new competitive pressures from Chinese AI labs have rattled momentum chip names.

Driven by these headwinds, Yardeni does not believe the sell-off has bottomed, explicitly warning that the "S&P 500 Semiconductors stock price index is likely to fall another 12% to its 200-day moving average."

Despite this tech turbulence, he sees underlying economic resilience in non-tech areas rather than a broader collapse. He advocates for a strategic sector rotation into Financials and Health Care—sectors Yardeni Research retains at overweight.

He emphasizes that these traditional industries are holding up well, buoyed by a “booming investment banking environment and strong performance across the biotechnology industry.”

By pivoting away from vulnerable chipmakers toward value-driven cyclical and healthcare plays, Yardeni anticipates the overall economy and market can weather the ongoing semiconductor reset.
