Stetson University announced plans to redevelop its 6.5-acre Tampa Law Center into a mixed-use district with a modernized campus.
Partnering with New York-based developer Bromley Companies, Stetson’s project would re-envision its law center at 1700 N. Tampa St. while allocating space for a hotel, residences, offices, retail and dining.
The university anticipates breaking ground next year.
Founded in 1883, Stetson University offers undergraduate and graduate programs at its main campus in DeLand with law campuses in Gulfport and Tampa. The Tampa Law Center opened in 2004 following demand for part-time, professional education in Tampa Bay.
Ben Barros, dean of the Stetson University College of Law, said the redevelopment looks to expand the institution’s continuing education and degree programs while strengthening its connections to downtown and the riverwalk through a walkable environment.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity to help reshape a highly visible site at one of Tampa’s most important urban connection points, said Nicholas Haines, CEO of Bromley Companies, in a statement.
Bromley Companies has 30 years of real estate experience in the Tampa market, having developed several office, retail, residential and mixed-use properties — most recently Midtown Tampa.
“Our work is guided by the idea that great urban projects need to serve more than one purpose,” Haines said. “They need to support the institution, strengthen the surrounding neighborhood and create lasting value for the broader community. That is the opportunity we see here with Stetson.”
Additional details on the project’s scope, design and timeline will be announced as planning advances.
