Kalen DeBoer hasn’t lived up to Alabama’s sky-high standards so far, notching four losses in each of his first two seasons at the helm in Tuscaloosa.
The Crimson Tide missed the College Football Playoff in DeBoer’s debut season. And last year, they suffered an embarrassing 38-3 loss to the eventual-champion Indiana Hoosiers in the CFP quarterfinals.
During Tuesday’s episode of “First Take” on ESPN, Stephen A. Smith urged Alabama to fire DeBoer if he doesn’t improve this coming season.
“He’s lost four games each season. They were lucky to get to the postseason. This man’s supposed to be about offense, they scored three points [against Indiana],” Smith said.
“Give him the money to just go away,” Smith added. “Call him Jimbo Fisher. Call him [Brian] Kelly. Do something. Get rid of him, because he ain’t the guy.”
Alabama reached a new seven-year contract with DeBoer in April, paying him $12.5 million per season.
“We are excited about the opportunity to continue our time in Tuscaloosa with this contract extension,” DeBoer said in a statement at the time. “This university has become a special place to us, and I look forward to working to ensure that Alabama football remains at the forefront of college football.

Alabama will begin its 2026 schedule with a matchup against the East Carolina Pirates on Sept. 5.
