State Department warns of ‘potential for unforeseen escalation’ in Middle East

The State Department has issued a worldwide caution for travelers because of escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran, with Americans in the Middle East at particular risk but urging caution globally. 

The “Worldwide Caution” was issued Monday, warning that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. 

“Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation,” the statement read. 

“Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world.”

The alert urged Americans in the Middle East to exercise caution and heightened vigilance, urging preparations for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and disruption to travel.

The State Department urges Americans abroad to enroll in the STEP program, step.state.gov, to receive the latest security alerts. They also recommend following the “U.S. Department of State – Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” channel on WhatsApp or @TravelGov on X

Fighting has escalated between the U.S. and Iran, with the U.S. retaliating against Iran for its attacks on commercial shipping, and Iran responding in turn by striking American bases across the Middle East.

Monday marked the tenth day of U.S. strikes against Iran. At least three U.S. servicemembers were killed over the weekend, bringing the total number of Americans killed over five months of fighting to 17. More than 400 service members have been injured.
