Star Wars is back in a big way on the PVOD streaming charts. Following its premium streaming debut, The Mandalorian and Grogu is the most-watched movie in the world on the Apple TV Store, according to data from FlixPatrol.
The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first new Star Wars movie in seven years, arrives on PVOD platforms two months after opening in theaters to disappointing box office returns. Its digital release, and the upcoming Blu-ray release in August, include bonus content, including featurettes and audio commentary.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Finds PVOD Redemption
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu brought the heroes from Disney+'s first Star Wars streaming series, The Mandalorian, to the big screen for the first time, while also introducing Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White to the Star Wars universe. In the movie, the evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, it has enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.
The Mandalorian and Grogu received a lukewarm reception from critics. They often compared it to a particularly long episode of The Mandalorian. Audiences have been somewhat kinder, boosting The Mandalorian and Grogu's Rotten Tomatoes user score significantly higher than its rating from critics.
CBR's The Mandalorian and Grogu review was positive. The review concluded, "Even with its flaws, the movie used its increased budget to its advantage and gave audiences an amped-up version of the TV series with genuine cinematic polish. The Mandalorian and Grogu may have needed a few more tweaks to the story, but its action-heavy pacing will never fail to entertain."
The Mandalorian and Grogu Is Finally Available at Home
The Mandalorian and Grogu posted some of the worst box office numbers in Star Wars' 50-year history.
Perhaps this strong PVOD performance is exactly what The Mandalorian and Grogu need. These characters were born on the television of those streaming Star Wars content at home. Perhaps they'll show up in strong enough numbers to help redeem the movie after its quiet run at the box office, especially once it eventually makes its way to Disney+.
New Lucasfilm head Dave Filoni has teased that The Mandalorian and Grogu is the start of a new era for Star Wars filmmaking. “Episode VII was a completely different entity,” Filoni said. “I had dreams of Episode VII since I came out of Return Of The Jedi. You were like, ‘After VI comes VII! Where’s VII?’ We’re in a completely different era of Star Wars now. What can’t you do now? It’s a question of, ‘Is the audience going to believe it? Are they going to feel it?’ That comes through the characters. If the characters are connecting, then the adventure plays, the action plays, the tension plays.”
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, alongside Sigourney Weaver, with Martin Scorsese and Jeremy Allen White participating in voice roles. Jon Favreau, who created The Mandalorian, directed The Mandalorian and Grogu from a screenplay he co-wrote with Dave Filoni & Noah Kloor.
